There's a lot going on in Chemnitz at the moment, and not just in culture! Under the motto “Chemnitz 2025 – European Capital of Culture” historical and modern aspects of this fascinating city will be presented in a variety of exhibitions. How MDR reports, the city, which in the past became known as “Saxon Manchester” due to its rapid industrialization, attracts artists and curious visitors from all over the world.
The upcoming exhibition “Chemnitz as Karl Marx City” in the Schloßbergmuseum offers insights into the development of the city after the Second World War. Until February 1, 2026, interested visitors can admire historical photographs, construction plans and everyday objects from bygone times. That sounds like an exciting journey through the city’s history! Opening times are Tuesday, Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while Wednesday is even open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entry costs 8 euros, reduced price 5 euros.

But Chemnitz offers much more than just an exhibition. With “European Realities” at the Gunzenhauser Museum from April to August 2025, an impressive collection of New Objectivity works from 20 European countries will be on display, including masterpieces by greats such as Otto Dix and Max Beckmann. Anyone interested in industrial history should not miss the “Tales of Transformation” exhibition in the Industrial Museum, which runs until November 16, 2025 under the motto “150 Years of Industrial History”.
And for all art lovers, “Werkschau – Made in Saxony” should be just the thing: from April 2nd to September 4th, over 300 artists from the Saxon creative scene can be admired. This diversity sends a clear signal that Chemnitz is still an important creative center.
