Chemnitz in transition: CTM is being dissolved – what happens now?

Chemnitz is currently undergoing significant changes in the areas of urban development and tourism. The city council has decided to dissolve Chemnitz Tourism and Marketing GmbH (CTM) in an orderly manner. This decision is not only a sign of the strained budget situation, but also aims to avoid multiple responsibilities. Current business should be transferred to existing structures, which promises efficient use of resources. The exact process will be closely examined during the liquidation process, with regular reports scheduled in the Administrative and Finance Committee. This is reported by Chemnitz Stadt.de.

The CTM, which was founded in 1993 as Chemnitz Economic Development and Development Company mbH (CWE), has changed significantly over the years. Originally responsible for economic development, the CWE expanded its spectrum to include tourism promotion and city marketing in 2011. With the renaming to Chemnitzer Tourismus und Marketing GmbH, the changed area of responsibility became clear, especially after economic development was transferred to the mayor's area of responsibility in 2022. This means that the focus is now more on promoting tourism in Chemnitz and on city marketing activities.

From tourism information to a new initiative

Another exciting development is the transfer of the tourism information to a new provider. Former employees are actively working to save another important offer. This initiative is particularly supported by the “Chemnitz attracts” campaign launched in 2008 by the municipal economic development agency CWE. The aim of this campaign is to help local companies recruit skilled workers and to make Chemnitz attractive nationwide, not least through an in-house online job portal.

A special highlight in recent years was the organization of an ICE train from Nuremberg to Chemnitz shortly before Christmas 2018, proof of the initiative's commitment to putting the city and what it has to offer in the best light.

A look into the future

The tourism and marketing restructuring aims to respond to the city's needs while finding more effective ways to conscientiously use existing resources. In addition, the CWE's core competencies, such as developing a tourism concept and intensifying tourism marketing, were strengthened. There are currently only 13 employees working in the company, but the planned reduction of the supervisory board from nine to five people will make management even clearer and able to act.

The developments surrounding the CTM are not only a sign of necessary change, but also an opportunity for Chemnitz to position itself as an attractive location for companies and tourists. The next steps will determine how successful this transformation is.
