Chemnitz cycles record-breakingly: over 682,000 kilometers collected!

CITY CYCLING was held again in Chemnitz from September 1st to 21st, 2025 and the city set impressive records. The number of active cyclists increased by 346 to a total of 3,498 participants, while the teams increased to 294, 74 more than last year. Together, the cyclists covered an incredible 682,626 kilometers, which corresponds to an increase of 107,025 kilometers compared to 2024. This leads to an avoidance of 112 tons of CO2, i.e. 17 tons more than before. These figures are preliminary, as overnight returns are still possible until September 28th. Chemnitz.de reports that the sharply increasing number of participants and kilometers show a great result.

Particularly noteworthy is the most active cyclist, Stefanie Zelt, from SG Adelsberg e.V., who covered an impressive 1,175.7 kilometers. Sten Brückner, the most active cyclist, even managed 2,860.2 kilometers. The students were also hard-working: the Ebersdorf primary school won the title of the most active primary school with 9,622.6 kilometers, while the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium not only impressed in the “Most bicycle-active high school/vocational school” category with 52,496.0 kilometers, but also as the most active team with the most total cycling kilometers.

A symbol of sustainability

CITY CYCLING goes beyond competition, it also serves a higher purpose. The aim is to promote the use of bicycles and draw attention to the needs of cyclists. The campaign aims to send a strong signal for sustainability and climate protection. In Chemnitz, this is supported by the citizen participation platform RADar, which enables citizens to point out deficiencies in the cycling network and thus promote improvements. Städtebau-Chemnitz informs that the 2nd Chemnitz Rally took place on September 6, 2025, in which over 150 participants cycled together for a good climate.

Environmental experts agree: significant environmental impacts can be mitigated by significantly increasing the proportion of cycling. In many cities it is estimated that up to 30% of car journeys could be shifted to bicycles. Federal Environment Agency emphasizes that not only is the environment relieved, but health also gets a boost: cycling can increase life expectancy and prevent diseases of civilization.

Social aspects and economic efficiency

Another benefit of cycling is the increased sense of community that is promoted through initiatives such as CITY CYCLING. Companies are encouraged to take part in order to strengthen company health management. Cycling together not only brings joy and exercise, but can also help to improve the everyday feeling in the city.

Overall, CITY CYCLING not only shows impressive activity and participation, but also gives the city of Chemnitz an important impetus to continue to advocate for sustainable mobility and improving the cycling infrastructure.
