Chemnitz starts MINT fit camp: children discover science!

What's new in Chemnitz? An exciting project is just around the corner: On Monday, June 30th, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m., a special event will take place in the M3-Raumbau, Sandweg 39. The children and youth foundation of the city of Chemnitz “Johanneum” organized a MINT fit camp here, which is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The aim is not only to introduce children to science and technology, but also to awaken their curiosity about future educational opportunities.

The MINT Fit Camp runs from June 29th to July 4th and offers participants exciting insights into science and technology. A workshop on the topic of “Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture 2025” will be held under the expert guidance of Fabrice Müller. In addition to this workshop, there is also a lot of exciting content on the program, including experiments, sports and lots of fun. The camp is pedagogically supported by the employees of the school camp in Küchwald run by Kinder-, Jugend- und Familienhilfe e. V. Chemnitz.

MINT fascination for young talents

The MINT-Fit project is supported by the Chemnitz University of Technology, which has received over 500,000 euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. This funding is intended to promote the holistic personality development of children, especially educationally disadvantaged primary school children, over a period of three years. The project is part of the “MINT fascination in southwest Saxony” initiative and includes not only the camp events, but also regular MINT clubs, experimental days and science shows.

A special highlight will be the MINT-Mobil, a transporter whose goal is to bring the associated action-oriented MINT education to the region. This is intended to ensure that children in structurally weak regions who come from families with poor education also have access to these exciting and educational offerings.

Important STEM initiatives

MINT education (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) plays a crucial role for our society and its challenges such as the energy transition and digital transformation. That is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has launched a comprehensive MINT action plan to strengthen the educational landscape in Germany from daycare to further education. Regional MINT clusters, like the one in Chemnitz, offer low-threshold, everyday activities for children and young people to promote their MINT skills and thus increase their social participation.

In total, there are already 73 MINT clusters that have been founded since 2020 and focus on promoting equal opportunities and working with schools. Whether in Mannheim, Karlsruhe or Stuttgart – work is being done everywhere to promote young talents and open up perspectives for them in the MINT subjects. In Chemnitz, the MINT Fit Camp makes another valuable contribution so that children from less privileged backgrounds can develop a feeling for science and technology.
