Helene Wagner: Chemnitz honors pioneering politician with memorial plaque

A special event is coming up in Chemnitz: On Friday, November 14th, at 11 a.m., a memorial plaque for the important politician Helene Wagner will be inaugurated in the SPD office at Dresdner Straße 38. Despite this occasion, the general public will also be offered the opportunity to take part in the event. Media representatives are also invited to experience the celebrations up close. Chemnitz informed that the inauguration is part of the “Women's Places in Saxony” project, which has been honoring historical women in various areas since 2016 and aims to increase the visibility of women in Saxon history.

Helene Wagner was born in Mittweida in 1870 and campaigned throughout her life for better working conditions, especially for women. As a domestic worker, housewife and seamstress, she witnessed the challenges many women faced. She gained particular attention when she spoke to 3,000 listeners in Leipzig in 1911 about women's suffrage. Her political ambitions led her to become a member of the Saxon People's Chamber and the Chemnitz City Council in 1919. After her death in Chemnitz in 1945, her legacy remained alive.

Inauguration program

The inauguration was welcomed by the chairwoman of the Working Group for Women in the SPD Chemnitz, Nicole Schieferdecker. Afterwards, Dr. Jessica Bock, chairwoman of the State Women's Council of Saxony e. V., introduce the association and the project “Women’s Places in Saxony”. All guests can look forward to an insightful lecture about the life and work of Helene Wagner, given by speaker Stephanie Pietsch. After the official speeches, the event concludes with a reception that offers space for personal encounters and discussions.

Significance of the “Women’s Places in Saxony” project

The State Women's Council of Saxony e. V., an umbrella organization of over 40 women's associations, associations and equality initiatives, is committed to the equality of women and men, in line with Article 3 of the Basic Law and Article 8 of the Saxon Constitution. In this context, the “Women's Places in Saxony” project is a particularly valuable project that not only honors historical figures, but also aims to sensitize current and future generations to the rights of women.

The inauguration on November 14th will therefore not only be a remembrance of the past, but also a look into the future of gender equality. The organizers are looking forward to welcoming many interested citizens to set an example for the commitment of women in society.
