Intervention area at the viaduct: celebration day for the whole family!
On Saturday, August 23rd, the ceremonial opening of the intervention area under the impressive railway viaduct in Chemnitz will take place. As part of the popular “Fertsch” weekend, the organizers invite you to an exciting program with free entry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There's something for young and old here, that's for sure!
Visitors can look forward to many activities, including guided tours of the newly designed area, a bicycle course run by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) and sporting games such as basketball and table tennis. A highlight will be the presentation of the art project “Treibgut – Stadtgut – Lifebuoy” by the artist Christoph Roßner. The Chemnitz Park Railway also provides entertainment and attractions such as a bouncy castle and a reaction wall. This makes the day a celebration for the whole family.
Redesign of the city park
The redesign of the area at the city park was only started in December last year and has now been successfully completed. The goal was to create a small park as a meeting place for all ages. The viaduct was not only restored, but also skilfully showcased as an architectural element.
An asphalted cycle path connects the pedestrian and cycle path bridge with Beckerstrasse, while a new park path leads directly into the city park. The seating area made of historical bridge elements and the viewing point in the north offer a magnificent view of the viaduct and the city. Seating elements made from former bridge parts and kilometer stones at forks in the road round off the concept. The embankments are now planted with wildflowers and trees, enhancing the entire area.
Urban development with vision
The total costs of the project amount to around 680,000 euros. The realization was ensured by various partners such as gardening and landscaping companies as well as landscape architects. The intervention area is part of a larger urban development project to design the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which also includes the railway viaduct. The original plan was to demolish the viaduct, but strong civic engagement campaigned for its preservation. The viaduct symbolizes the commitment of the people of Chemnitz.
The day is rounded off with musical accompaniment from Stefan Weyh and DJ Wenzelyzer, making the celebrations a thematically colorful experience. So if you don't have anything planned on August 23rd, you should definitely stop by and enjoy the newly designed intervention area and the variety of activities.
