Reading Flowers for the Underdog”: Honor for Rainer Klis in Chemnitz!
A very special evening will take place in Chemnitz on Thursday, September 18, 2025: The reading “Flowers for the Underdog” honors the life's work of the talented writer Rainer Klis. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Neue Sächsische Galerie in TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Entry costs 8 euros, concessions 6 euros, and tickets are available at the box office.
Rainer Klis, born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (today's Chemnitz) in 1955, was not only a versatile author who became known both in the GDR and after reunification, but also an active figure in Saxony's literary and political life. After 1989 he campaigned for the preservation of the popular book trade and was president of the Saxon Writers' Association from 1989 to 2007. He has also been a member of the PEN Center Germany since 2005. Klis died in October 2017, but his work lives on, not least through the posthumous publication of his short stories and prose miniatures, which will appear in 2024 by Mitteldeutscher Verlag Halle (Saale) under the title “Flowers for the Underdog”.
Participants and musical accompaniment
At the reading, the writers Katja Lange-Müller, Ralph Grüneberger and Hans Brinkmann will demonstrate their reading skills. The musical accompaniment comes from jazz guitarist Helmut “Joe” Sachse. A selection of stories are planned that bring Klis’ themes and characters to life. In particular, his stories about Saxon backwoodsmen who dream of freedom are a homage to the people of his homeland.
One of the central characters in his stories is Rudi, a protagonist who tries to free himself from the expectations of his relatives and society. These impressive stories invite you to immerse yourself in the thoughts and creative process of a unique author.
An evening to remember
The reading is not only a tribute to Rainer Klis, celebrating his literary work, but also an opportunity to remember his 70th birthday, which is coming up in 2023. The event is organized in collaboration with the Neue Sächsische Galerie and the Chemnitz City Library and promises to be an enriching experience for all literature enthusiasts and fans of Klis’ work.
