The discussion about the rail connection between Chemnitz and Leipzig is reaching new heights: Ines Springer, board member for transport at ADAC Saxony, recently supported a petition from the IHK Chemnitz, which is calling for the rapid expansion and construction of this important railway line. ADAC Saxony reports that the initiative aims to persuade the Saxon state parliament to fully finance the planning work for electrification and double-track expansion. In a statement, Springer emphasized the essential role of an efficient rail connection for economic growth and sustainable mobility in the region.
The IHK Chemnitz highlights the currently inadequate long-distance transport connection, which not only affects commuters but also makes it more difficult for skilled workers to settle there. Even though the electrification of the line is already being planned, the continuous double-track expansion remains incomplete. Concerns about rising construction costs and financial bottlenecks in the budget threaten to endanger the project until 2032.
Petition with a strong signal
The petition is addressed directly to the Saxon State Parliament Petitions Committee and calls for sufficient funds to be made available in the 2025/26 budget. A project with a long history
The history of the project reads like a crime novel: Project groups from ministries, municipalities, associations, funding institutions and Deutsche Bahn have been involved in planning and financing for over 25 years. The current planning status focuses on the year 2024, where financing for the planning phase has already been secured. But as is so often the case in life, there is still a risk that the project will fail or be delayed due to a lack of budget funds.
In total, more than 3,000 supporters have already signed the petition, with the goal of collecting a total of 12,000 signatures. A strong signal to state politicians that it is time to set the right course for the future of the region.
