Dresden shakes: trams collide – six injured!

Early on Tuesday evening, October 15, 2025, there was a spectacular collision between two trams on Leipziger Straße in Dresden. At the Watzke switch, a place that was recently replaced in the summer, the railways collided at the level of the Elbcenter. The cause of the accident is currently unclear, but as MDR reports, the injured include both the drivers of the two trains and four passengers, including two children aged around two and twelve years are.

All of the injured complained of pain, particularly in the head and limb areas, and were taken to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment. Both trams derailed due to the force of the impact, which required a large number of firefighters and the Dresden public transport company. The rescue took several hours, while Leipziger Straße was completely closed until around 11 p.m. so that the necessary work could be carried out.

The chaos on the tracks

The emergency services, consisting of 22 specialists from the Alberto and Striesen fire and rescue stations, had their hands full. Just recently, another accident in the city made the headlines. A collision on Friday evening, in which a tram driver apparently did not pay attention to a light signal, also led to a derailment and caused an estimated total damage of around one million euros, according to Welt reported. At that time, the rescue work had to take several hours, and this incident once again showed the dangers on our roads.

Overall, it appears that the number of traffic accidents in Germany, which was around 2.5 million in 2024, continues to be a cause for concern. While the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remains at historical levels, there is fortunately a downward trend in road fatalities. However, inattention and recklessness, as human factors, remain the main causes of many of the accidents described. According to Statista, the use of e-bikes and e-scooters in particular poses a further risk in road traffic.

It is to be hoped that the city and the transport companies learn from these incidents in order to both improve the infrastructure and raise the awareness of transport users. The initiatives, which work under the motto “Vision Zero”, want to eliminate traffic deaths by 2050. This is a goal we should all work towards.
