Dresden shaken: attempted robbery by young people at Postplatz!
There are increasingly worrying incidents in Dresden that call public safety into question. On June 25, 2025, there was a widespread incident at Postplatz when three young people attacked a 19-year-old man and demanded money from him. This aggressive approach resulted in the victim suffering minor injuries, but he managed to escape. The criminal police, who happened to be nearby, immediately intervened and arrested two of the suspected perpetrators - a 14-year-old Syrian citizen and a 15-year-old German. The two young people are now being investigated for attempted extortion, which further underlines the already high rise in youth crime in Germany. According to information from Statista, youth violence reached a peak in 2024 with around 13,800 cases, more than twice as high as in 2016. Particularly alarming: almost three quarters of the young suspects are male, and the proportion of those convicted by the courts under the age of 21 is an incredible 84 percent.
Psychological stress, which has been increased by the Corona measures, is considered a key reason for this worrying trend. It is also being discussed whether harsher penalties in the juvenile justice system could serve as a deterrent, but this is met with controversy. Instead of just relying on sanctions, the focus should be more on prevention and support for children and young people in order to counteract criminal careers.
Traffic accidents are increasing
But there are not only alarming developments in juvenile crime, Dresden is also under pressure in the area of traffic safety. Statistics show that accidents involving buses and trams have increased significantly. In 2024, 394 tram accidents were recorded, which is almost a quarter more than the previous year. Fortunately, there were no further deaths, but the number of injured at 79 should not be underestimated. Bus accidents have also increased by almost 30 percent. The parliamentary group leader Holger Zastrow from Team Zastrow is calling for a rethink in transport policy in order to make the system more efficient again.
The reason for the increase in accidents is changing traffic flows and construction sites, which further complicated the already tense traffic year of 2024. Another problem factor is the bridge collapse in September 2024, which further aggravated the situation. The urgency to act now is undeniable, especially since “lateral misjudgment” has been identified as the primary cause in three out of four bus accidents.
The situation in Dresden is a challenge that needs to be addressed urgently, both in terms of youth crime and road safety. With a greater focus on preventive measures in both areas, the foundation for a safer future can perhaps be laid.
