Dresden court fights against international car theft – trial opens!
Car thefts are a growing problem in Germany, and a current trial at the Dresden Regional Court is shedding light on the machinations of criminal gangs. The defendants Maciej W., Adam Z. and Norman R. are suspected of stealing a total of nine vehicles in several cities, including Dresden and Leipzig, in the first half of 2022. These cars were then brought to Poland. According to the Dresdner Latest News, the list of stolen vehicles includes, among other things, two caravans, two jeeps, two Audis and other vehicles, all of which are very popular with car thieves.
The approach of these gangs is sophisticated: On April 9, 2022, for example, a jeep worth 45,000 euros was stolen in Dresden. However, numerous stolen vehicles did not go undiscovered; some, like an Audi A6 valued at 100,000 euros, were discovered by police shortly before they were picked up. The three defendants protest their innocence and claim that they only made transport trips to Poland without knowing about the stolen vehicles.
Police in action against car pushers
The investigations against the international car trafficking gang show that this is a widespread network. According to recent reports in the Leipziger Volkszeitung, two suspected members were arrested in Poland last week. These men, aged 36 and 46, are suspected of repeatedly stealing Mazda vehicles since 2023. All of this is happening as part of a comprehensive investigation by the Dresden public prosecutor.
The gang members, who often operate in the border region with Ukraine, use specially constructed transshipment points to resell stolen cars and parts in Eastern Europe. During police searches in the region, officers confiscated highly professional thieves' tools and technical equipment related to automobile thefts.
Car theft on the rise
And the situation is alarming: The ADAC statistics show that the number of car thefts in Germany increased by almost 20% in 2023 compared to the previous year. A total of 14,585 stolen vehicles with comprehensive insurance caused economic damage of 310 million euros. The danger is particularly high in Berlin - a car disappears there every two hours. The most popular brands among thieves are Toyota and Volkswagen, whose models are disproportionately the targets of theft.
According to the presiding judge, the taking of evidence at the Dresden Regional Court did not always agree with the statements of the defendants, which makes clarifying the facts of the case even more complicated. The trial will continue in the coming days as the police continue to crack down on the criminal structures.
