EKD Synod in Dresden: Church discusses power and abuse!

On November 9, 2025, the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) opened its doors in Dresden. Until Wednesday there will be intensive discussions in the Saxon state capital about the status of the church and its role in society. The ceremony began with a solemn service in the Epiphany Church, at which the Saxon regional bishop Bilz gave the sermon. The central theme of this year's synod is “Church and Power”.

What is special about this meeting is the context: the discussions were triggered by the results of a comprehensive investigation into cases of abuse in the Protestant church, which was published in January 2024. 128 members of the synod address the role of the church in times of crisis. A peace memorial will be presented on Monday, which will be part of the consideration of how the church can respond to social challenges. These topics capture a zeitgeist that calls for ethical and moral guidance more than ever, especially in times of uncertainty.

What does church mean today?

The word “church” itself, as its meaning is demonstrated in different contexts, evokes quite different associations. It's not just about the physical space, but also about community, beliefs and values. How important are these aspects in a world in which many things are changing rapidly? In the current situation, where faith meets the test of the strength of the institution, this deep sense of coming together and faith could be crucial in overcoming crises. Wordhippo provides interesting perspectives on this.

The current synod therefore represents an institution that is trying to find its place in an increasingly complex world. It is up to members to overcome these challenges and perhaps find new ways to be more relevant to society. It is not only important to deal with cases of abuse, but also how to bring issues such as peace and power to the fore.

A church voice in difficult times

What emerges here is the need for dialogue. Audiences, both inside and outside the church walls, are curious about how these issues are discussed and addressed. An open ear for people's concerns and needs could lead the way to positive development.

The influence of churches and religious communities is often very important in times of crisis, because they not only offer a place of worship, but also of mutual exchange. The synod should provide a platform for this and raise the questions that are important to many people.

And while the EKD meets in Dresden, it remains to be seen what results and solutions will be produced to strengthen the church as a social contact point. It is often said that the church must be relevant not only in worship but also in everyday life, especially in turbulent times such as today.

We will continue to monitor developments and report. Stay tuned!
