Track construction at Carolaplatz: diversions for tram lines 3 and 7!
The city of Dresden is currently facing a noticeable change in local transport. From today, October 7th, 2025, important track construction work will begin at Carolaplatz and will last until October 17th. The reason for these measures are the worn switches, which urgently need to be replaced, as well as the planning of the new construction of the collapsed Carola Bridge. These construction measures have an impact on tram lines 3 and 7, which will be rerouted during this time.
As the MDR reported, the Carolaplatz stop will not be served during the entire construction work. Line 3 will be rerouted between Neustadt train station and Augustusbrücke via Anton-/Leipziger Straße. The same applies to line 7, which also runs from Albertplatz via Neustadt train station to Augustusbrücke. The Dresden Transport Authority (DVB) wants to ensure that passengers can still get to their destinations despite the construction sites.
Why the conversion is necessary
The track work is a direct result of the demolition of the Carola Bridge. The old condition can no longer be maintained and a complete rebuild of the track structure at Carolaplatz is therefore necessary. The Saxon explains that the switches will not only be replaced, but also adjusted. The radius of the new track curves will be slightly modified to optimize operations. In short, there is a good hand in planning here to increase the efficiency of the trams.
But car traffic will also be affected by this construction work. Restrictions are expected around Carolaplatz during the construction period, which can significantly impact traffic in this central area of Dresden. If you wanted to go to the city center by car, you should plan a little more time.
Further changes to the tram network
In addition to the work at Carolaplatz, there will also be track work in Dresden's old town around Münchner Straße on October 25th. Tram lines 3 and 8 are affected here and will also have to be rerouted. Line 3 runs from the Wilder Mann stop to the North Central Station and is then diverted via Gret-Palucca-Straße to Hugo-Bürkner-Straße. To alleviate this inconvenience, DVB AG is setting up a replacement bus route ED3, which runs between the stops Gret-Palucca-Straße, Hauptbahnhof, Nürnberger Platz and Plauen, Nöthnitzer Straße, as DAY24 highlights.
The next few days will definitely be characterized by construction sites. But the city is trying to meet the existing challenges with well-thought-out solutions. This can be seen in the diversions and the information measures that are intended to help all road users get through the renovation safely and safely.
