Verdi's Falstaff: Love, jealousy and comedy conquer the stage!
The world of opera will soon be enriched by another cultural pearl. On October 6, 2025, the Staatskapelle of the Semperoper will perform Verdi's masterpiece “Falstaff” under the direction of Daniele Gatti. Gatti, who describes the opera as one of the most demanding, emphasizes the importance of precision both in the orchestra and on stage. This high art form requires fine interaction and a feeling for the lively themes that Verdi takes up.
“Falstaff” is about the different facets of love and highlights three central relationships. On the one hand there is the senile love of Sir John Falstaff himself, the relationship crisis between Ford and his wife Alice, and the fresh, new love between Nannetta and Fenton. Gatti sees Giuseppe Verdi as the Shakespeare of music and points to contemporary themes such as human connections, jealousy and the often impossible love. The comedy contains melancholic moments that encourage smiles rather than hearty laughter, showing Verdi's ability to narrate with tenderness and nostalgia.
A masterpiece with history
“Falstaff,” Verdi's final opera, premiered on February 9, 1893 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and is considered a renaissance of musical comedy. The Italian composer, born in 1813, led an eventful life. Even though he initially struggled with comic operas, he and his librettist Arrigo Boito managed to create a work that stands the test of time. The literary sources come from the works of William Shakespeare, especially from “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and the two parts of “Henry IV.”
The plot of “Falstaff” sees Falstaff, an aging knight, attempt to defraud two wealthy ladies, while at the same time running into conflict with Ford, the husband of one of these ladies. The story is humorous, passionate and takes place in Windsor, England around the year 1400. The premiere was a huge success and elevated Verdi to a new level in the world of opera composition.
The magic of Verdi
Verdi, who also composed operas such as “Aida”, “Otello” and “La Traviata”, has created another masterpiece with “Falstaff”, which not only captivates listeners but also inspired later composers such as Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini. Over the years, listeners and performers have also been carried away by the melodies and profound themes of this comedy, as quaver.ch impressively shows.
Understand why “Falstaff” is still popular today and is performed by the best orchestras. Gatti and the Staatskapelle are aware of the responsibility to keep this memorable opera alive and to present it in all its facets. While the world waits for this production, it is to be hoped that “Falstaff” will also captivate future generations.
