World Transplantation Games 2025: A celebration of life awaits you in Dresden!

What an event is about to happen! From August 17th to 23rd, 2025, Dresden will be the venue for the World Transplant Games, the first of its kind in Germany. Over 2,500 athletes, living donors and their families from more than 50 nations are making their way to the Elbe city. The purpose of this special event is to raise awareness about organ donation and promote amateur sports among transplant recipients.

Dresden was chosen to host this important competition due to its central location and cultural diversity. Supported by local institutions that put their heart and soul into it, numerous competitions in over 17 sports will take place in the Ostra sports park, especially in the Heinz Steyer Stadium. These include, among others, athletics, swimming and badminton. Not to be forgotten is the patron of the games, the well-known singer and lung transplant recipient himselfRoland Kaiser, who campaigns tirelessly for organ donation.

A colorful supporting program

The opening of these special games will take place on Sunday, August 17th, with a festive supporting program. The “#ReasonToGive RUN by SachsenEnergie” starts at 9 a.m. in the Great Garden, followed by an intercultural celebration in the Frauenkirche and a parade of nations that moves from the congress center to the Heinz Steyer Stadium. The highlight of opening day is the celebratory ceremony at 6 p.m. in the stadium.

But that's not all! Not only sporting competitions will be held throughout the week. A city festival will take place on the Altmarkt from August 15th to 17th, which offers, among other things, a walk-in heart model from the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) and the opportunity to get an organ donation tattoo. A real highlight is the cultural evening on August 20th at Citybeach Dresden with sporting activities, music and culinary offerings - free entry from 8 p.m.!

The World Transplant Games are more than just sporting events; they are a symbol of life and the gratitude of everyone who has been given a second chance through organ donation.
