Dulig sounds the alarm: SPD must reposition itself for the future!
In Saxony there is a lot of simmering within the SPD. The former economics minister and member of the state parliament, Martin Dulig, clearly criticized the party leadership. How MDR reports, Dulig has announced that he will not vote for Henning Homann, who, together with Kathrin Michel, has been steering the fortunes of the SPD Saxony since October 2021. Dulig accuses the party leadership of making a noticeable mistake when forming a government and negotiating the double budget.
“A small group is making the party its prey,” complains Dulig and calls for more support for social associations and cultural associations, which, in his opinion, are neglected by the party leadership. In order to prepare for the upcoming state elections in 2029, he calls for a clever strategy. Homann, however, sees the election result as “honest” and speaks of a clear mandate to renew the party, but also emphasizes the need for an open culture of debate.
The coalition negotiations
But the internal disputes are not the only thing that concerns the SPD. Both the CDU and the SPD are currently intensively involved in coalition talks. How Day24 As described, explorations for a possible blackberry coalition have already been broken off. Martin Dulig could become a minister again, but the question arises as to how many ministries the SPD would have in a three-party alliance. In a minority government, the SPD could claim two ministries.
Despite the pressure, Dulig is by no means tired of his duties. With ten years in the Ministry of Economics, he can look back on a long political career and remains an influential player within the SPD. It will be interesting to see whether he will sit as a simple member of the state parliament in the worst case scenario, in which the coalition negotiations do not bear fruit.
Member voting and the future of the SPD
A highlight is imminent: the vote on the coalition agreement with the CDU will end on December 16, 2024. As the Saxony's SPD reported, the member vote took place between December 1st and 15th and was carried out under notary supervision. The result, eagerly awaited, could have a significant impact on the direction of the party.
Petra Köpping, who is currently considered destined for ministerial office, emphasizes the SPD's responsibility in the current political situation. The coalition agreement covers crucial issues such as education, health and social security, and is intended to serve as the basis for the future government in Saxony. The SPD is also planning to introduce a Saxony fund to create and secure jobs, while at the same time making it clear that it rejects any cooperation with the right-wing extremist AfD.
The way forward
In order to address the challenges, the party leadership has already established a project group that is dealing with the analysis of the last election results in order to develop strategic recommendations. All of this is done with the aim of establishing the SPD as a “network party” and attracting new members. It remains exciting to see how the tensions within the party continue to develop and what role Dulig plays in this.
