Drunk against traffic island: Görlitz driver suffers accident!

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, there was a traffic accident in Görlitz that was proven to be alcohol-related. A 54-year-old driver from Poland, who was driving an Opel, caused a crash around 6 p.m. when he crashed into a traffic island in the Nikolaigraben while under the influence of alcohol. During a breath alcohol test, the police found a blood alcohol level of 1.88, which caused quite a stir. The driver was slightly injured in the incident, while the property damage amounted to around 8,000 euros. The police immediately ordered a blood sample and confiscated the driver's driver's license. The Görlitz police station said the investigation is still ongoing. This incident once again underlines the problem of driving under the influence of alcohol and the associated dangers, as saechsische.de reports.

An incident from the past shows that drunk driving in Görlitz is not an isolated case. On August 8, 2025, a 34-year-old Ukrainian woman hit a Toyota while pulling out of a parking space, causing property damage of around 1,500 euros. She was also drunk; the test showed 1.9 per mille. The police also took the driver's license and the vehicle keys and arranged for a blood sample to be taken. Such incidents not only pose a threat to road safety, but also affect many bystanders.

Road safety and other incidents

In the context of traffic safety, the police in Görlitz have recorded a number of other events that occurred due to carelessness and disregard for traffic rules. A serious traffic accident on the A4 on August 8, 2025, in which a 23-year-old German drove a Mercedes Sprinter into an Audi, resulted in three slightly injured people and total damage of around 80,000 euros. Here, too, the motorway was closed for 90 minutes to allow the accident to be recorded. Such events make it clear that traffic accidents can often have far-reaching consequences, not only for those affected, but also for the general public.

There were also reports of anti-constitutional graffiti in various parts of the region. In Bautzen, unknown people smeared slogans on house walls and power boxes, which resulted in property damage of around 200 euros. The state security agency has started the investigation. Such acts are disturbing and show that there is also a growing need for vigilance in the region. Further graffiti was recorded in Pommritz and Wittichenau, prompting the police to take more intensive action against these crimes.

Such incidents are not only a wake-up call to the police, but also to the public, especially road users. The dangers of drunk driving are evident and everyone should take responsibility to make the roads safer. Because road safety affects us all.
