Bautzen is planning a mega-renovation: the town hall will be an event highlight!

A new chapter is opening in Görlitz: the foundation stone for the renovation of the long-closed town hall was laid. The historic Art Nouveau building, which has no longer been used since the end of 2004, is being brought into shape with an impressive total budget of 50.7 million euros. This opportunity is particularly gratifying as the first attempts at restructuring repeatedly failed due to financial constraints. In 2012, a planned renovation was stopped after costs were overestimated. The building, which has been closed by the building police since 2014 due to the acute risk of collapse, only experienced a ray of hope in 2017 with the establishment of a town hall foundation, as this helped to raise urgently needed funds to advance the renovation.

There has been a real rain of funding in recent years: in 2018, the city was able to receive commitments of over 36 million euros from the federal government and the Free State of Saxony. In autumn 2023, we were pleased to receive additional funds that would make it possible not only to renovate the town hall, but also to transform it into a multifunctional event building. The plans include a new extension that will include smaller rooms for meetings, congresses and various cultural events.

The foundation stone has been laid

With the laying of the foundation stone for the renovation, anticipation of a reopening in 2029 is growing. The heart of the new town hall will be a large concert hall with space for around 1,500 people. An additional new foyer will also be built, which should significantly increase the attractiveness of the venue. In order to maintain operations in the long term, it is necessary to hold around 115 events annually. This is particularly important in order to meet the increasing need for spaces for international meetings and conferences - a need created by the newly established research institutions in the region.

A new future project

The town hall in Görlitz will not only be a place for events, but also a cultural meeting point for the entire region. The anticipation for the coming years is palpable and it will be exciting to see how the project will develop. The city has a good knack for shining a new light on the legacy of the town hall, despite the challenges of recent years.
