Eternal friendship: New bank in Oderwitz honors two men from Upper Lusatia
A lot is happening in the picturesque landscape of Upper Lusatia! In a special place on the “Jeschkenblick” street in Oderwitz there has recently been a bench that is more than just a place to sit. It serves as a memorial to a long-lasting friendship between men that was only ended by death. Thomas Faust, a 55-year-old citizen from Oderwitz, has a personal connection to this location because his grandfather, Michael “Michel” Daufratshofer, mined stone there for the family home in 1954. These nostalgic memories inspired Faust to pursue a deep concern.
The monument commemorates the friendship between his grandfather and Wolfgang Kuhne, Andrea Meinel's father. The two men shared a special relationship, forged by their shared love of Upper Lusatia and difficult economic times. Andrea Meinel originally had a memorial plaque in mind, but this idea could not be realized. Thomas Faust suggested replacing the old, rotten bench with a new one and attaching the memorial plaque to it.
A symbol of connection
The meaning of this friendship is deeply rooted in history. Faust's grandparents, who moved from the Allgäu to Oderwitz in 1953, experienced a turning point with the construction of the Wall, but the connection between the two families remained. While Faust's grandfather worked as technical manager of the Damino weaving mill, Wolfgang Kuhne held the same position in the local cable factory. Even after Kuhne moved to Plauen, the friendship lasted until their death - Michel Daufratshofer died in 1986, Wolfgang Kuhne in 2011. The new bank was recently inaugurated with a ceremonial inauguration by Andrea Meinel and Thomas Faust, surrounded by family members. They toasted the two friends with a glass of Elbe wine.
