Görlitz tourism is booming: overnight stays are rising to record levels!

Görlitz tourism has drawn positive interim results in the first half of 2025. In total, the city recorded 150,245 commercial overnight stays and 64,680 arrivals from January to June. This is an increase in overnight stays of 2.3 percent compared to the same period last year, where only 146,814 overnight stays were counted. Even though arrivals have fallen by 6.2 percent compared to the previous year - in 2024 there were still 68,959 - it shows that the capital of Upper Lusatia is still a popular travel destination. The average length of stay increased from 2.1 to 2.3 days. Görlitz.de reports that demand increased noticeably in the second quarter after the first quarter was rather quiet.

The managing director of Europastadt GörlitzZgorzelec GmbH, Eva Wittig, is satisfied with these figures. She emphasizes that Görlitz is very popular as a city break destination even outside of the main season. “The attractive cityscape and the cultural diversity as well as the leisure activities contribute to the stability of the visitor level,” says Wittig. She is optimistic about the second half of the year and is committed to improving the quality of stay.

But why do tourists come to Görlitz? One reason is certainly the film sets, which have made the city an important filming location for Hollywood productions. The city marketing promotes Görlitz under the catchy name “Görliwood”. Zachary Thomas, the mayor of Görlitz, explains: “Many visitors are amazed by our historic old town and the unique film set locations.” Last year, around 147,000 tourists and business travelers were counted in the city, spending a total of 328,000 overnight stays. This was the highest number in the city's history. A report by MDR shows that tourism in Görlitz is increasing, especially after the corona pandemic, with an increase of around nine percent in 2023.

Visitor structure and outlook

A large proportion of international guests come from Poland, followed by tourists from Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the USA. The average length of stay of guests in the city is 2.2 days. These positive trends make it clear: Görlitz is not just an insider tip, but has established itself as an attractive city worth traveling to and offers an excellent experience for all visitors.

With further growth in mind, Görlitz is full of potential. The city will continue to do everything in its power to increase its attractiveness and attract even more visitors in the future. The developments of the next few months therefore remain to be eagerly awaited.
