Heat wave causes construction delays: completion only on July 11th!

High temperatures are causing construction sites to falter: Current construction projects in Cologne are affected by the extreme weather conditions. As the Wochenkurier reports, the planned work on Kastanienallee to Holunderweg has to be postponed due to the tropical heat. Construction work was originally scheduled to be completed between June 30th and July 7th, but high temperatures in the 27th calendar week disrupted the plans.

A decisive factor for the delay is the professional installation of the asphalt surface layer. The asphalt work requires ideal conditions and the slow cooling of the material could jeopardize its strength, causing additional stress for residents and road users if the road is completely closed. For this reason, the installation of the top layer has now been postponed to the 28th calendar week, with the first section being completed by July 11th.

Construction delays due to weather conditions

Weather delays are a common challenge in the construction industry, as explained on cordulus. Unexpected weather conditions can not only disrupt the construction process, but also jeopardize safety on the construction site. They also have a seemingly endless impact on the availability of labor and the coordination of subcontractors and material logistics.

The construction site in Cologne is not only struggling with the high temperatures, but also with the consequences of sub-optimal weather planning. A data-driven approach to identifying and reporting these delays is critical. The construction manager is therefore tasked with logging daily weather conditions and documenting weather-related delays in order to maintain an overview and minimize the temporal impact.

Asphalt and its importance

When rehabilitating roads, the use of high-quality asphalt is crucial. According to the information on deutag, the surface layer, which is the top layer of the road, should be renewed every 12 to 15 years in order to meet the requirements for safety and stability. This consists of non-slip and wear-resistant aggregates and is directly exposed to the weather and traffic. Proper handling of construction site materials is particularly important, especially during hot days when the asphalt cools more slowly and may not achieve the necessary stability.

The entire measure consists of two phases: While the first phase is scheduled to be completed by July 11th, the renewal of the second phase is planned for July 14th to 25th. Here, passage is made possible by using a traffic light system on one side of the road. A good hand at dealing with these logistical challenges can make the difference in whether the project stays on schedule or not.

It remains to be seen how the extreme weather conditions will affect the construction project in the long term. By then we hope for more suitable temperatures so that work on Kastanienallee can progress quickly.
