Niesky receives 1.4 million euros for pioneering timber construction projects!
Niesky, a charming town in Upper Lusatia, has reason to be happy today: it is receiving 1.4 million euros from the federal budget for innovative timber construction projects. This grant comes directly from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and has the promising project name “From Tree to Construction”. The aim is to play a key role in the structural change in Lusatia and to revitalize the value chain in timber construction in the region. How Sächsische.de reports, the project aims to revive the tradition of industrial timber construction, shaped by the company Christoph & Unmack in the 1920s and 1930s.
As part of the project, several priorities have been set: In addition to the construction of a model house settlement with eight to ten houses, which will be selected through a Europe-wide architectural competition, the construction of an innovative multi-storey building with straw-wood modules is planned. This will be built at the “Eichenhof” location behind the Netto market. In addition, the training of specialists in timber construction will play an important role by expanding the teaching content at TU Dresden. The total project costs amount to around 1.8 million euros, with the city contributing its own contribution of around 360,000 euros by mid-2028. This year, 53,400 euros have been earmarked for coordinating measures.
A network for timber construction
The course has been laid for a flourishing construction industry, as wood as a material will be very popular in the future. The construction industry is facing fundamental change - both large and small and medium-sized companies are becoming more important. Under the umbrella of the “Baum2Bau” project, a network is being established for all players in timber construction in the region. Jens Nieders, as network and project manager, acts as the central contact person. Like the page B2B Niesky shows, “Baum2Bau” is not only funded by the federal government, but is also part of the federal “Future Region” competition. This is an exciting opportunity to strengthen the timber construction industry in rural Upper Lusatia and advance sustainable construction projects.
The Lausitz region is also a crucial part of the structural change in Germany. Since the Structural Strengthening Act came into force in August 2020, considerable funds have been flowing into the region to cushion the loss of industrial jobs. A total of 10.32 billion euros in structural funding will be made available by 2038. A large part of the money is concentrated on projects in Lusatia, such as on the platform lausitz-strukturwandel.de is to be read. Despite the financial aid, there are concerns that smaller municipalities, like Niesky, will be disadvantaged by structural hurdles when applying for funding.
As it turns out, Niesky is not alone, but is part of a broad movement towards more sustainable and future-proof construction. With the new timber construction projects, the city will actively shape its place in structural change and thus also take on a pioneering role in the Lausitz region. It will be exciting to see how these developments will unfold in the coming years.
