Nieskyer Bahnhof is becoming more expensive: 4.2 million euros for mobility center!

In Niesky something is happening - the plans for the renovation of the local station take on shapes. It was recently announced that the total cost of the project of 3.2 million euros is now increasing to 4.2 million euros. Knut Grädämel, Managing Director of the Moveas Society, which also includes Oberlausitz omnibus traffic (OVO), was optimistic about the progress of the plans. The train station, which has been owned by Moveas for three years, is to be transformed into an “innovative mobility center” that should appeal not only rail travelers, but also bus users and tourists. This becomes an important node for mobility in the northern district of Görlitz, such as the Saxon Zeitung reports.

The construction plans were already submitted to the district building authority on March 7, and reworking has been completed for four weeks. The local building authority now has up to three months for approval, with a decision to do a decision by the end of August. As long as everything goes according to plan, construction work could begin with the new year. A grant of 244,800 euros from the city of Niesky also secures a financial contribution, with 183,600 euros remaining in the city.

conversion plans in detail

The targeted mobility center will not only be returned to the old waiting room, but also provide a ticket output as well as tourist offers and public toilets. To round off the whole thing, the former station pub is to be transformed into a cozy bistro. In addition, the OVO headquarters are moved to the ground floor, while the upper premises are converted into commercial units-a real profit for the economy in the region.

The attic is intended for pension rooms, which should be particularly attractive for business travelers. Outside there will be additional parking spaces for cars and buses, which further improves the accessibility of the station. The infrastructure is also being used: the demolition of a dilapidated extension should mark the first steps in the right direction, while the conversion of an outbuilding is to be accommodated to accommodate the OVO management.

funding and challenges

The renovation work is part of a larger structural change, funded by the federal government. On March 18, 2024, the project received the funding commitment. Nevertheless, the funding guidelines represent challenges - the city of Niesky must bear 10% of the eligible costs, i.e. 241,000 euros, according to the guidelines. Mayor Kathrin Uhlemann sees these funding an important step to combat economic decline in the region. However, their efforts to apply for additional funding have so far been rejected.

Current discussions about the conversion of the station also reflect larger questions of mobility that are currently on the agenda all over Germany. A sustainable turnover of traffic is urgently needed not only to reduce climate -damaging emissions, but also to maintain the urban habitat under changed climatic conditions. An analysis of the Federal Center for Political Education shows the urgency to integrate new drive technologies and to strengthen the public transport network.

With the plans for the Niesky train station, an important step is taken in the right direction. If everything goes on schedule, the mobility center could not only strengthen the region, but also set a sign of the whole Lausitz - especially on the way to a sustainable future.
