Traffic accidents in Görlitz: Fewer deaths, more injuries in 2024!

Today, August 25, 2025, we take a look at the current traffic situation in the Görlitz region, which has changed significantly in recent years. The Görlitz Police Department reports that a total of 13,410 traffic accidents were registered in the Bautzen and Görlitz districts in 2024. Compared to 2023, this represents a decrease of 3.0 percent, which amounts to 408 fewer accidents. While the number of traffic deaths fell to 29, which represents a pleasing decrease of 19.4 percent, there is an increasing trend in the number of injuries.

What is particularly notable is the increase in the number of seriously injured people, which rose to 510. The number of slightly injured people even increased by 12.9 percent to 1,984. Such numbers speak volumes and show that despite fewer fatal accidents, many people in the region are still suffering.

Causes and backgrounds

The main cause of personal injury accidents is failure to follow right-of-way rules, which is responsible in almost 20 percent of cases. Excessive speed is the second most common cause at 15.3 percent. One could say that understanding of traffic is not always equally important here. The danger is particularly great for young road users between the ages of 18 and 24, as they were involved in almost 1,943 accidents.

Old hands, on the other hand, are not immune either, as seniors aged 65 and over are also severely affected. Their involvement in accidents increased by 6.8 percent and they are often the ones who feel the dangers on the road, either as drivers or cyclists. Another trend is the increasing number of accident victims on Pedelecs, where the proportion increased from 13.8 percent in 2023 to 22.2 percent in 2024. E-bikes and e-scooters are increasingly proving to be dangerous companions on the road.

Road safety in focus

The police will also take increased action against drunk driving in 2024. The number of accidents under the influence of alcohol fell slightly to 281, but 1,201 drivers were stopped under the influence. This shows that prevention work must not be allowed to slack off in the last few meters. In view of these figures, efforts to improve road safety are extremely important.

In Germany, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in 2024. This marks a decline compared to previous years, but at the same time the number of accidents with personal injuries remained at an alarming level - similar to 1955. This inventory should give us all something to think about, because the goal of "Vision Zero", i.e. no traffic fatalities by 2050, is a challenge that pushes us to the limits of our road safety policy.

In summary, it should be noted that road safety in Görlitz, despite positive developments in some areas, still poses major challenges. It is important to take the decline in injury statistics seriously and to combine all efforts to make the roads safer. Stay vigilant and remember: the road belongs to all of us – let’s look out for each other!
