From bad luck with injuries to rock star: Andreas Görlitz tells his life!

Andreas Görlitz, once a prominent player for FC Bayern and the German national team, highlighted Uli Hoeneß's formative role in his career in a recent interview. The 43-year-old former football professional, who is also musically active, moved from 1860 Munich to Bayern Munich in 2004, which brought him a lot of headwind from both fan camps. But the then Bayern manager Hoeneß always acted in the best interests of his player, as Görlitz made clear in his story. Despite a significant injury break of two and a half years and a total of five operations, Hoeneß extended Görlitz's contract, which gave him security and helped him to continue his career. The injury-related standstill was a tough time for Görlitz, but on the advice of his physiotherapist, Oliver Schmidtlein, he started playing the guitar to relieve the boredom. “Hoeneß even advised me to go on vacation with my girlfriend for two weeks and forget everything,” remembers Görlitz fond. This was a sign of trust that gave him additional motivation to strive for a return to professional football.

What would football be without the stories of the characters that shape its history? Another formative coach for Görlitz was Louis van Gaal, who was known for his special methods and clear tactical approach during his time at Bayern. “It wasn’t easy for Van Gaal to form a real unit with us,” explains Görlitz. Reviews of his time with the Dutch coach are mixed, but one episode remains unforgettable: To illustrate his serious approach, Van Gaal dropped his trousers in the dressing room. An emotional moment that showed that his decisions always served the team and not his own ego.

Life after football

Görlitz's career at Bayern spanned until 2010, with him being loaned out to Karlsruher SC between 2007 and 2009. His time at Bayern was marked by success: he won three championships and cups. He ended his professional football in 2014 after a short stint with the San José Earthquakes in the MLS. Since then he has worked as a coach at his hometown club, TSV Rott/Lech, and is bringing a breath of fresh air to the Bavarian A-class.

Görlitz remains musically active and is a member of the band “Room 77”, which once appeared as the opening act for rock legends such as AC/DC. Despite the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic, the band continues to release new music and occasionally host performances. In addition to music, Görlitz is also dedicated to the real estate industry and has started editing music videos for other artists in recent years. This mix of football, music and new projects shows that Görlitz remains creative and successful even after active sport.
