Weißwasser: Ice hockey talent Charleen Poindl conquers Canada!
The ice hockey talents are causing a sensation in Weisswasser. The focus is particularly on 15-year-old Charleen Poindl, who is currently taking an exciting step in her sporting career. How Sächsische.de Reportedly, in January 2024, Charleen received an email from a scout at the Ontario Hockey Academy in Canada. He asked if she was interested in transferring to the prestigious hockey boarding school. She attracted attention at the U18 World Cup and her achievements did not go unnoticed.
The Poindl family initially decided against an immediate change in order to enable Charleen to finish tenth grade in Germany. A smart move, because it meant she was able to play for another year in the U15 and U17 teams at ES Weisswasser and further develop her skills. Coach Marius Stöber emphasizes that Charleen was considered a top performer and impressed with her strength and speed. Her talent ultimately led to her participation in the German U18 national team, which recently won a place at the 2026 Olympic Games.
Off to new shores
However, the Poindl family has now made a decision: they have signed up for the Ontario Hockey Academy for the coming school year. On August 31, 2025, Charleen will head to Cornwall, Canada to start at the prestigious Academy on September 1. This facility is considered the largest ice hockey school with a boarding school and has an excellent reputation for optimally preparing players for competition.
Charleen will rush straight from a national team clinic to the airport and then play over 50 games in the Canadian season. This opportunity is critical not only to their athletic development, but also to their ability to earn a college hockey scholarship. Charleen is determined to improve in all aspects of her game, especially tactically.
Awards and challenges
Before her departure, she was honored by the Erich Kühnhackl Foundation as the best striker of the 2009 class and was delighted to receive a Golden Puck and a check for 15,000 euros. But this step also brings greater financial burdens for the family. The need for sponsors is high, as is LR Online emphasized.
There is great anticipation for the new challenges in Canada, and the entire ice hockey community in Weisswasser is keeping its fingers crossed for Charleen and her family. Because one thing is certain: with her talent and tireless commitment, she will definitely make her way overseas.
