Overcoming borders: Saxony and the Czech Republic join forces in fire protection

An important meeting of those responsible for the Interreg project “Saxony – Czech Republic” took place today in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior. The aim of this meeting was to intensify cooperation in fire protection on the Saxon-Czech border. This is particularly significant after the devastating wildfires of 2022 highlighted the urgency of such collaborations. How medienservice.sachsen.de reported, the joint management of the project between the Free State of Saxony and the General Directorate of the Czech Fire Brigade is on solid ground.

The topics discussed at this meeting are as diverse as they are important. The focus was on the development of cross-border operational procedures as well as a risk and danger analysis. Improving Saxon-Czech communication also played a central role. Sub-goals were defined, including the development of tactical measures and preparation for cross-border operations. Another point was the procurement of innovative equipment, which is essential for maintaining and improving cross-border cooperation.

Concrete measures and partners

The Saxon project participants include the districts of Görlitz, Bautzen, Saxon Switzerland - Eastern Ore Mountains, Central Saxony, Erzgebirge, Vogtland and the city of Dresden. The financing for this important project comes with support of around 6 million euros, provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). This is a sensible investment in the security of both countries and aims to better manage potential threats such as those posed by forest fires in the future.

But what exactly is Interreg? How on interreg.eu can be read, Interreg promotes cooperation between organizations from different countries in order to overcome cross-border challenges. These programs not only offer financial support, but also help to build networks and share experiences. This lays the foundation for a strong European community based on cooperation and shared growth.

EU funding and cooperation

The Interreg Europe program is also an important part of European cohesion policy. Not only public authorities from EU member states are eligible to participate, but also organizations from Norway, Switzerland and the Western Balkan states. The funding can cover up to 80 percent of the costs of a project, which offers applicants considerable financial relief. Details about funding opportunities can be found on the website smil.sachsen.de to find.

The current efforts surrounding the Interreg project “Saxony – Czech Republic” are an excellent example of how cross-border cooperation can be actively shaped. When it comes to overcoming challenges together, it becomes clear once again: things are better together!
