Newcomers in the classroom
Diana Freund emphasizes how important previous teaching experience can be in making it easier to start your career as a teacher. “The support from an employee of the State Office for Schools and Education was very valuable to me,” she reports. The school's director, Martin Weinke, who is himself a career changer, is also pleased with the acceptance of the new teachers at the schools and is convinced that they are an enrichment for the team.
The GEW union is generally satisfied with the program, but is calling for longer preparation and better support for career changers. Burkhard Naumann from the GEW warns of a “practice shock” that many career changers experience, as the transition to the teaching profession is associated with challenges. Nevertheless, the trend of bringing committed people from other professional fields into schools seems to be beginning to bear fruit.
The future of the teaching profession
The numbers speak for themselves: While two thirds of career changers stay in their careers long-term, the rest are ready to throw in the towel. It remains to be seen how this trend will develop and what further measures will be taken to sustainably combat the teacher shortage.
