FC Augsburg lost to Leipzig 0:6 – a game to forget!
On the 8th Bundesliga matchday, FC Augsburg suffered a bitter defeat when they lost 6-0 to RasenBallsport Leipzig. The coach Sandro Wagner had changed the starting line-up compared to the previous game against 1. FC Köln in order to set new accents. Mert Kömür was missing due to illness, while Alexis Claude-Maurice got his chance in the first eleven. Elvis Rexhbecaj was also back in the squad after back problems, which was welcomed positively by many fans.
The home game took place in the WWK ARENA to mark the 15th anniversary of the FCA KidsClub. But the FCA was unable to convert the initial tension into something tangible. The first opportunity came in the 8th minute through Kristijan Jakić, but he missed the goal. Less than three minutes later, Yan Diomande gave the guests the lead. Leipzig upped the ante within a few minutes: Rômulo, in the 18th minute, and Antonio Nusa, in the 22nd minute, ensured a clear 3-0 lead. Even though Augsburg showed defensive weaknesses, there were no personnel changes in the second half.
Leipzig is showing itself strong
Leipzig's defense remained rigorous, while Augsburg increasingly struggled to generate dangerous shots. Christoph Baumgartner took advantage of another opportunity shortly before half-time and increased the score to 0:4. In the second half, the visitors picked up where they left off and Assan Ouedraogo increased the score to 0-5 in the 56th minute. A triple substitution by FCA, in which Ismael Gharbi, Phillip Tietz and Elvis Rexhbecaj came into play, couldn't save the situation. Finally, Castello Lukeba finished the game 6-0 in the 65th minute.
In front of 28,600 spectators, the mood among the fans was subdued. The FCA now has to turn things around as quickly as possible, because VfL Bochum is already waiting for them in the DFB Cup on Tuesday. In recent weeks, Augsburg have shown positive approaches, such as the 1-1 draw against Cologne, in which Fabian Rieder took the lead from a penalty and Said El Mala equalized. But the clear defeat against Leipzig raises questions.
Next challenge for the FCA
Now it remains to be seen whether Sandro Wagner will find new approaches to pull the cart out of the mud in the next game against VfL Bochum. Fans and those responsible are hoping for a quick turnaround, after all FCA can play much better than the last results show. The euphoria is put to the test, but the support of the supporters remains strong even after this defeat.
