Major construction site on Dieskaustraße: New routes and traffic safety for Leipzig!
Leipzig's Dieskaustraße is becoming a major construction site: renewal, diversions and increases in construction costs for 2025 and beyond.

Major construction site on Dieskaustraße: New routes and traffic safety for Leipzig!
There is currently a lot of work going on on Dieskaustraße in Leipzig. Construction work connecting the Knautkleeberg and Plagwitz districts is in full swing. The second construction phase, which covers the stretch between Antonienstrasse and Kulkwitzer Strasse, will come to an end on June 27th. Residents and road users can already admire the newly designed roadways, sidewalks and cycle lanes, which ensure greater traffic safety. The city has also made great efforts to ensure accessibility in this area. The LVZ reports that the redesign also includes the expansion of parking areas and the installation of guidance systems for the blind, which is particularly advantageous for people with disabilities.
Another highlight of the measures are the 22 new trees that are to be planted in autumn. In addition, around 1.5 kilometers of drinking water pipes and almost 900 meters of sewage pipes will be replaced. In order to better control construction site traffic, the section from Kulkwitzer Straße to the cycle track will remain closed. The diversion will take place via Windorfer and Altranstädter Straße, and a rail replacement service will also be provided for tram line 3, which will remain active beyond June 27th.
Construction progress for the entire Dieskaustraße
How MDR reported, the work is not limited to this section. The overall plans for Dieskaustraße provide for an expansion over a length of 2.5 kilometers between Antonienstraße and Brückenstraße. The tracks and tram stops will also be redesigned to be handicapped accessible. It was recently announced that construction work in the Großzschocher area between Brückenstrasse and Huttenstrasse will take place from July to November 2023.
The entire route is scheduled to be completed by 2027. Even though Dieskaustraße will be completely closed during the construction work, the municipal utilities are also busy renewing their supply lines so that the infrastructure will be sustainably improved. The diversions have been well thought out to ensure accessibility for residents and traffic.
Rising construction costs and schedule
The initial schedule called for the construction sites to be completed by 2027, but this is now expected to be postponed to 2028. As far as costs are concerned, they skyrocket from the originally planned 21.75 million euros to around 30.25 million euros. This enormous increase of 8.5 million euros is primarily due to lower funding from the Free State, which leads to higher contributions from the city of Leipzig. This shows once again how important it is to plan long-term traffic in the city and to keep residents informed about current developments. DAY24 helps to keep an overview of construction sites and possible traffic disruptions.
