Children for climate protection: Theater project Hello Atmosphere” in Leipzig!
Things will be exciting in the lively city of Leipzig in the coming days! The open-air production “Hello Atmosphere” by the Theater der Junge Welt (TdJW) will take place in Robert Koch Park from June 21st to 24th. Here children become adults who talk about important future issues from their perspective and interact interactively with the audience. This project, which deals with intergenerational justice, is an important artistic-political intervention in the midst of current social challenges such as populism, the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the extinction of species, which also bring climate change into focus. MDR reports that ...
As part of the production, a “Council of Generations” is convened in the theater, bringing together children, young people and adults to think about a common vision for the future. Dramaturg Justus Rothländer emphasizes how important it is to hear the voice of the younger generation in an aging society. After all, young people in Germany are often a minority due to demographic developments. Therefore, the stage in the park is enriched with improvised elements such as traffic lights and tires, while children in fluorescent vests with megaphones interactively ensure an exciting experience.
The performance will be an experience for everyone
In addition to the haunting children's voices, those present can look forward to strong statements on climate change, including texts from school children from Leipzig. These statements about the environment, such as about driving and the extinction of animals, show the children's deep concern. The project is being realized with the help of the Federal Cultural Foundation, which is providing a generous 118,800 euros. The audience is expected to be instructed before singing along, meaning the production combines elements of a church service and a choir rehearsal.
The final performance will be supplemented by the results of the “Council of Generations”, which will publish its very personal manifesto on June 24th, which will then be passed on to politicians in Berlin. Liesbet Swings, the artistic director of the Dutch theater Artemis, supports the young participants during rehearsals and brings her experience into the design of the performance. Theater Artemis is known for its innovative approaches and has won numerous awards. Together with the citizens of Leipzig, who come from different age groups, everyone present is called upon to think about the challenges of today.
Intergenerational justice and climate protection in focus
But the issue of intergenerational justice goes beyond artistic performances. In a discourse in Austria by scientific experts, including Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lukas Meyer, has had a lasting impact, it becomes clear that climate protection affects us all. It is about the fair distribution of resources across generations, as today's young people must bear the consequences of past mistakes in caring for our planet. S4F deals with...
The ongoing failures in the area of climate protection endanger the quality of life of future generations. Reference is also made to legal perspectives that can still be developed in order to ensure a fair exchange between generations. The theater educational project “Hello Atmosphere” helps to shed light on this topic and creates a space for further discussion that is relevant not only in Leipzig but also far beyond.
