Children for climate protection: Theater project Hello Atmosphere in Leipzig!

In the lively city of Leipzig, it will be exciting in the coming days! From June 21 to 24, the open-air production "Hello Atmosphere" of the Young World (TDJW) will take place in the Robert Koch Park. Here children become adults who talk about important future topics from their perspective and act interactively with the audience. This project, which deals with generation justice, is an important artistic-political intervention in the middle of the current social challenges such as populism, the Russian war of attack in Ukraine and the extinction of species that also focus on climate change. MDR reports that ...

As part of the staging, a “Council of Generations” is convened in the theater, which brings together children, adolescents and adults to think about a common vision for the future. Dramaturg Justus Rothländer emphasizes how important it is to hear the voice of the younger generation in an aging society. After all, due to demographic development, young people in Germany are often a minority. Therefore, the stage in the park is enriched by improvised elements such as traffic lights and tires, while children in light vests with megaphones interactively provide a rousing experience.

The performance will be an experience for everyone

In addition to the haunting children's voices, those present can look forward to strong Statements on climate change, which, among other things, emerged from texts by school children from Leipzig. These statements about the environment, such as driving through the car and extinction of animals, show the deep concern of the children. With the help of the federal cultural foundation, which provides generous 118,800 euros, the project is realized. It is expected that the audience will be instructed before singing along, whereby the staging unites elements of a service and a choir rehearsal.

The final performance is supplemented by the results of the “Council of Generations”, which publishes its very personal manifesto on June 24, which will then be passed on to politicians in Berlin. Liesbet Swings, the artistic director of the Dutch Theater Artemis, supports the young participants during rehearsals and brings their experience to the design of performance. Theater Artemis is known for its innovative approaches and impresses with a variety of awards. Together with the Leipzig citizens who come from different age groups, everyone present is called to think about the challenges of today.

generation justice and climate protection in view

But the topic of generation justice goes beyond the artistic performances. In a discourse in Austria, that of science experts, including Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lukas Meyer, has been shaped sustainably, realizes that climate protection affects us all. It is about the fair distribution of resources over generations, since today's young people have to wear the consequences of past mistakes in dealing with our planet. The persistent omissions in the area of climate protection endanger the quality of life of future generations. Reference is also made to legal perspectives that are still able to develop in order to ensure a fair exchange between the generations. The theater pedagogical project "Hello Atmosphere" helps to illuminate this topic and create a space for a further discussion that has not only in Leipzig but also far beyond.
