Leipzig celebrates: Radio play summer starts with diversity and inclusion!

The Leipzig radio play summer starts today with an exciting program for families and radio play enthusiasts. The event opens on Wednesday afternoon, with a special focus on the topics of inclusion and creative radio drama. [MDR] reports that the festival is once again a highlight for the city this year, with a wide range of activities for young and old.

In the evening, the winning piece of the Günter Eich Prize 2024, “Cyfre or: Heads and Tails”, will be presented. This piece addresses the human need to measure everything in numbers and promises to make viewers think. The media foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig also contributed to the festival and supported the event with 4,000 euros.

A varied program

The radio play summer program includes both radio plays and live radio plays, workshops and even four competitions. Thursday becomes particularly exciting when sign language is used for the first time in the morning program “Wake Up Call”. This initiative marks the ongoing commitment to inclusion and accessibility. A collaboration with Theater Leipzig makes it possible to make social and cultural offerings accessible to everyone.

A personal highlight for co-organizer Katharina Gloe is the evening program “Lust for Life” on Friday, which deals with iconic personalities such as Iggy Pop. The musician and director Kai-Uwe Kohlschmidt is also expected this evening to present a radio piece about his band Sando.

Funding and support

Despite the enthusiasm for the event, the Hörspielsommer e.V. association is facing financial challenges. As MDR reports, the city of Leipzig has frozen cultural project funding, which contributes to the association's uncertainty - around a third of the budget is currently missing. In order to still implement the festival, the team takes a financial risk and tries to gain support through donations and savings in the program.

The festival, which takes place in the beautiful Richard Wagner Grove, is an open-air event. Visitors are invited to bring picnic blankets or deck chairs to enjoy the program in a convivial atmosphere. Admission to all radio play summer events is free.

Overall, the radio play summer is an important forum for radio play art. It was first held in 2003 and has since established itself as an important cultural part of the city. [Medienstiftung] emphasizes that there will be exciting projects and award ceremonies on the program again in 2024, with many talented artists and creative minds enriching the scene.
