Leipzig publisher Spector Books wins for the most beautiful books!
On Monday, the “most beautiful German books” of 2025 were honored in Berlin, an event that makes the hearts of book lovers beat faster. Loud MDR An independent jury selected a total of 25 publications from around 600 submissions. Among these outstanding works are five titles from Central Germany, with the Leipzig publisher Spector Books winning four awards. Another award-winning work comes from the Weimar publisher M Books.
Spector Books has established itself as the most successful publisher in the competition, known for publications that sit at the intersection of art, theory and design. A highlight among the award-winning books is the five-part essay series by Alexander Kluge, which deals with artificial intelligence in film. In addition, Oxana Gourinovitch's work “Raising the Curtain” analyzes two Soviet opera houses, which impressively shows the thematic range of the award-winning works.
Diversity of categories
The award not only focuses on the content, but also emphasizes the creative qualities of the works. The selection is made in five categories:
What has been particularly remarkable since 1929 is the diversity that the competition has shown in German book production. The Book Art Foundation emphasizes that the selection is not only a showcase of artistic book design, but also reflects the breadth and depth of contemporary literature. The quality and creative use of the book medium are crucial criteria.
Book design in focus
The importance of aesthetics and authenticity was also highlighted by jury members such as Timo Reger and Ulrike Wollenberg. “Beauty alone is not enough,” emphasizes Reger, “you also have to consider the authenticity and the relationship between the design and the content.” Wollenberg describes jury work as an enriching experience that offers space for exchange and new perspectives. The “Book Art Foundation Prize”, which will be awarded at the award ceremony on September 6, 2024 in the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt, is endowed with 10,000 euros, which should further increase interest in good books.
In a world where digital media often dominates, this competition sends a strong message about the appreciation of book art and production and promotes awareness of the design elements that make books a special experience. How important this aspect is is also shown by the many great entries, which jury member Harri Kuhn enthusiastically reported back.
