New support association saves Leipzig literary institute from cuts
The German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) is currently facing cuts, highlighting the need to strengthen institutional support. To counteract this, the new support association “Institutsgesellschaft” was founded. The focus should be on supporting the DLL and ensuring sustainable support for literary education. Ulrike Draesner, the first woman to receive a permanent position at the DLL in 2018, emphasizes the importance of the institution for the literary landscape. Kerstin Preiwuß also joined the institute in 2021, further promoting female representation.
Since its founding in 1955, the DLL has developed into a central address for literary education, initially as the “Johannes R. Becher” Institute for Literature with the aim of promoting the ideological and artistic training of writers. Over the years, however, the approach to literature has changed - dystopias and gender and identity issues are now more than ever the focus of aspiring writers. Curiosity about social issues is also evident in the applications and texts submitted, where coming-of-age stories often appear.
Historical roots and modern developments
The DLL not only has a rich history, it is also closely linked to the GDR past. Villa Giesecke, the institute's current headquarters, has a complex past, including use by the Stasi. In order to deal with this history, an exhibition was initiated that makes the connections to the city's history and literature visible.
Originally founded as the first literary institute of its kind in Western Europe, the DLL achieved university status in 1958 and became an important place for creative minds. Over 950 students completed their training here between 1955 and 1990. After the revival in 1995, the first graduates received their “Bachelor in Literary Writing”, followed by a fundamental restructuring of the course offerings. From the winter semester of 2006/07, the diploma course was replaced by the bachelor's course. As the Institute website As explained, the focus of the training is on a combination of theoretical and practical seminars.
Application process and course offerings
Those interested in studying at the DLL should be aware that registration for the aptitude test only takes place within the specified time frame. Participation as a guest without passing the aptitude test is excluded. However, students at the University of Leipzig have the opportunity to take part in certain cross-faculty modules. Guest auditor status is not available and there are no part-time or online offerings at the DLL - the courses take place exclusively in person.
Applications must be written in German, and all study programs are in German. Another point of the application is that proof of a successful aptitude test is required in order to be able to take part in the bachelor's or master's program. There are no age restrictions, and the course can also be started without a general university entrance qualification, provided that special artistic aptitude can be demonstrated.
Given current developments, it is clear that the German Literature Institute Leipzig continues to play an essential role for aspiring writers in Germany and beyond. With the support of the new support association and a clear vision for the future, the DLL remains a place of cultural exchange and literary development.
