News from the budgie oasis: young birds are finally flying!
There's a lot going on at Leipzig Zoo at the moment! The summer holidays attract countless families from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Bavaria and Brandenburg to explore the zoo's lively enclosures and attractions. How thuringia24 reports, the newly designed budgie oasis is particularly appreciated by visitors, which has been able to look forward to a comprehensive overhaul since 2018.
This oasis is conveniently located opposite the koalas and at the Arche discovery house and offers around 100 square meters of space for around 50 young budgies (Melopsittacus undulatus) that have already fledged. What's special: The budgies' breeding season lasts all year round, which is why the small birds are always an attraction for visitors. Zoo boss Jörg Junhold announced in a podcast that the oasis was so well received that they can probably continue to expect offspring.
Love and care in the animal world
It's not just the budgies who are in a good mood! The white-nosed coati (Nasua narica) gave birth to two young animals on May 15th. The female Nina, supported by another female, is very caring in the specially equipped mother's room and looks after the offspring. The cubs' father, seven-year-old Carlos, also does an excellent job in the group, living in the show area with two other coatis. These little rascals can't be seen at the Pantanal complex yet, but visitors can look forward to a first look soon.
The number of visitors to zoos and animal parks is consistently high. Statista has found that around 20 million people in Germany visit a zoo or amusement park every year. This is no coincidence: In addition to the classic animal enclosures, the facilities also offer botanical gardens, aquariums and exciting adventure and playgrounds that are particularly attractive for families with children.
Future of zoos
The importance of zoos has come into greater focus in recent years, particularly in relation to animal welfare. There is always a loud discussion about species-appropriate husbandry and animal protection. Many facilities are responding to society's wishes by making efforts to house fewer animals in larger areas and to create protected areas for the animals. Despite some challenges, such as the massive losses during the corona pandemic, the numbers show that zoos and animal parks continue to be an important part of leisure activities.
For Leipzig Zoo, the continued flow of visitors is a sign that the development of the budgie oasis and the breeding programs are on the right track. The zoo will certainly continue to be a place full of life and joy for young and old in the future. We can only hope that the little budgies master their first attempts at flight just as successfully as their animal counterparts!
