New logistics center at Leipzig Airport: Realterm is investing heavily!

Big things are happening at Leipzig/Halle Airport: After Amazon stopped its activities at Germany's second largest cargo airport, there is good news. A new construction project is imminent and that could provide fresh impetus in the region. The US company Realterm has acquired the area once used by Amazon and plans to build a state-of-the-art air cargo facility there.

Up to 45,000 square meters of storage space is planned, which will be designed for both single and multi-user businesses. This new system will be connected directly to the tarmac, which will significantly speed up movements between aircraft and trucks. Lynn Kau, Senior Vice President Corporate Development at Realterm, emphasizes the growth potential of the project, while Frank Pieper from Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG praises the ideal conditions for air cargo companies at the location.

Optimal connection and diverse use

The new air freight facility will not only be important for air freight logistics itself, but also for increasing transport efficiency. The Airside access and the unhindered connection to motorways are intended to minimize transfer times and make processes run more smoothly. Leipzig/Halle Airport, which already handled an impressive 1.4 million tons of freight in 2024, will further consolidate its role as a central hub in air freight traffic.

For the region, this not only means economic benefits, but also new jobs and training opportunities. The airport offers 24/7 operations for cargo and e-commerce, coupled with modern customs services and a skilled local workforce.

Growth of air freight logistics

Air freight logistics has become increasingly important worldwide in recent years. According to that Aviation portal The air freight market has grown steadily due to deregulation, the liberalization of freight markets and the increasing demand for fast transport solutions. This is also reflected in the growth at the airport: in 2020, a total of 4.6 million tons of freight were handled in Germany.

Leipzig/Halle plays a central role here, together with Frankfurt and Cologne/Bonn, where over 90% of the freight volume in Germany is handled. These airports are known not only for their scale, but also for their quality in air cargo logistics, which proved resilient during the pandemic.

Given the intense competition with neighboring countries such as France, the Netherlands and Belgium, it is crucial that German airports can continue to offer the best conditions straight away. So it is important that regulatory framework conditions to be designed appropriately so as not to fall behind in international competition.

The planned construction project at Leipzig/Halle Airport could not only be an important step for Realterm, but also for the entire region and air freight logistics in Germany. So it remains to be seen how developments around this important project will unfold.
