Renovation of the House of Festivals”: costs are exploding in Leipzig!

The renovation of the former theater venue “skala” at Gottschedstrasse 16, which closed its doors more than a decade ago, is becoming a financial challenge for the city of Leipzig. Originally calculated at six million euros, the costs have now risen to a dizzying 13 million euros lvz.de reported. Head of the Cultural Office Tobias Kobe has confirmed that this amount will not be enough and the construction project is likely to receive a building permit in September 2025.

A look into the building's past shows that it has had a long history since it opened as the “Metropol” social center in 1882 and has been known under various names. In the future, the “House of Festivals” will serve as a cultural hub in Leipzig and will be used by various groups, including the Leipzig Jazz Club and DOK-Filmwochen GmbH.

Challenges in the city parliament

However, construction costs are not the only hurdle. On June 20, city councilors introduced amendments to fund the project, which l-iz.de are of concern. The application calls for eight million euros to be secured for the Filmkunsthaus, which is considered an important part of the construction project. Green city councilor Anna Schneider-Kaleri in particular expressed concerns about the role of art and media in society. The political framework seems to be changing as a result of new constellations, which is not exactly conducive to cultural policy.

The increasing costs are being fueled by a variety of factors: In addition to fire protection and sound insulation requirements, damage to the building that has now been identified has also contributed to this development. The originally planned planning costs increase from 550,000 euros to 1.1 million euros. Cultural Mayor Skadi Jennicke made it clear that these applications would be taken seriously and should be incorporated into the planning.

Cultural cuts and uncertain political situation

While Leipzig's cultural scene struggles to overcome these financial challenges, rising energy costs and stagnating revenues also come into the equation. How mdr.de reported, this leads to moderate cuts in the cultural sector, which, however, are not accepted without reservation. Jennicke criticizes the attacks on identity-forming cultural institutions, while at the same time there is uncertainty in the city council, which makes it difficult to form a stable majority.

Leipzig will continue to be confronted with both the practical challenges of the “House of Festivals” and political turbulence in the city council. What is certain, however, is that the city attaches great importance to cultural development and is sticking to its plans. The coming months will certainly show whether enthusiasm for culture and art can actually overcome financial hurdles.
