Siemens presents new Mireo trains for the S-Bahn in Central Germany!

An exciting chapter in the history of rail transport is opening: Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility are together setting new standards for the S-Bahn in Central Germany. Today, on November 9, 2025, Siemens Mobility presented the new train models for the S-Bahn Central Germany (MDSB2025plus) at the Wegberg-Wildenrath Test Center. These new fleets consist of a total of 75 Mireo trains, all equipped with modern amenities, including the environmentally friendly, battery-powered Mireo Plus B. The launch of these innovations is scheduled for December 2026 and will be accompanied by an investment of around 500 million euros, the largest order for the Mireo train platform.

What exactly does this new train offer entail? The planned trains will be provided in different configurations: 41 three-car trains for the state railway, 18 four-car trains and 16 two-car Mireo Plus B trains for DB Regio AG. These new models are not only a win for transport companies, but above all for commuters and travelers who will benefit from increased capacity, more comfort and reliable connections.

Comfort and environmental friendliness in focus

The Mireo trains can accommodate 100 to 200 passengers, depending on the model, and are equipped with spacious multi-purpose areas. There will also be space for bicycles and a separate area for first class will also be available. Travelers can enjoy free Wi-Fi, power outlets and USB sockets. The new trains are not only more comfortable, but also up to 25 percent more energy efficient than comparable models.

Another advantage of the Mireo platform is its versatility. It enables both electric and battery-electric trains, which will cover a total of 10.6 million train kilometers per year on the MDSB network. Lines such as S 4, S 6 and S 30 for the four-car Mireo variant, as well as S 3, S 5 and S 1 for the three-car and second battery trains are planned.

Innovation for the future

Deutsche Bahn's philosophy is strongly focused on innovation. This demonstrates the commitment to sustainable mobility and cooperation with university institutions and young companies so that the mobility of tomorrow can be actively shaped. Through close cooperation with the Association of University Professorships in the Railway Industry (VUE) and the promotion of endowed professorships at universities, a strong focus is placed on the training of future specialists. This is intended to make better use of innovative solutions for rail transport in order to counteract the challenges of the shortage of skilled workers.

With a clear commitment to technological advances and a focus on sustainability, Deutsche Bahn is proving to be a driving force for sustainable rail transport. 23 Mireo fleets with over 550 trains are already operating successfully, and so it will be exciting to see what further milestones will be achieved in the near future.
