Coach exodus at SC DHfK: Son Runarsson before a change?

The current events at SC DHfK Leipzig are causing waves. On June 21, 2025, the club parted ways with coach Runar Sigtryggsson, and this makes waves not only because it is a coach, but also because of family circumstances. The sacked coach's son, Andri Runarsson, a talented backcourt player, appears to be facing an uncertain future as he is close to leaving the club. According to media reports, Runarsson, whose contract runs until 2026, wants to move after his father is released.

The situation is delicate. With Luca Witzke leaving the club and Joas Hönicke retiring, Runarsson could be given a bigger role next season. Added to this is the long-term injury to Simon Ernst, who will not be available to the team for quite some time. In this critical phase, SC DHfK only signed two new signings, Tomas Piroch and Adam Lönn, for the half positions. There are also rumors that Icelandic player Blaer Hinriksson may be brought in to support Runarsson, but this information has not yet been officially confirmed. However, managing director Karsten Günther has clearly communicated that they continue to plan with Runarsson and that he should remain in the squad for the coming season.

The future in focus

During his vacation, Runarsson delved into his sense of adventure and hired a new advisor to plan the next steps. It remains to be seen how the personnel decisions will affect the coming season. In the event of a change, SC DHfK could collect a transfer fee, but at the same time they needed two new players to fill the central position.

The Handball Bundesliga is considered the strongest league in the world, and SC DHfK Leipzig has to prove itself in an intensely competitive environment. There have been many exciting developments recently. SC Magdeburg was able to shine as the reigning Champions League winner, while Füchse Berlin won the European League. HSG Wetzlar also hired Matthias Ott as the new athletics coach and will take care of the health management of injured players. The coaching changes in the league, such as at TV Hüttenberg and the signing of Stefan Kneer, also show the dynamics in which the league is moving.

In these turbulent times, the fans and stakeholders of SC DHfK Leipzig remain hopeful that the right decisions will be made to overcome the challenges and strive for a successful season. The developments surrounding Andri Runarsson will certainly be followed closely in the coming days, and perhaps SC DHfK can soon offer a glimpse of positive changes while at the same time taking on the sporting challenges.
