World Elephant Day: Leipzig's zoo celebrates the gentle giants!

August 12 marks International World Elephant Day, an occasion that brings people together around the world to pay attention to the majestic elephants and promote their conservation. This special day, celebrated since 2012, aims to raise awareness about the threats facing elephants worldwide. Every year, thousands of these magnificent animals die at the hands of poachers who make a fortune from the illegal trade in tusks, skin and meat. What is particularly alarming is that the population of Asian elephants has halved in the last 45 years. There are currently only around 50,000 of these venerable animals left on our planet, which underlines the importance of World Elephant Day. TourCompass describes that countries like Sri Lanka have already taken massive steps by burning ivory caches to protest these disgusting practices.

It is all the more gratifying that there are institutions like Leipzig Zoo that actively support elephants. The zoo not only offers species-appropriate husbandry, but also invites you to special programs on August 12th to properly celebrate World Elephant Day. In keeping with this, the elephant temple Ganesha Mandir was opened in the zoo, which has been in operation since 2006 and offers the Asian elephants optimal living conditions. Here the pachyderms are kept in a natural environment with sandy soil, several bathing pools and special activities such as food balls and hollow tree trunks. The elephants are currently having a great time bathing in their outdoor enclosure, which is also delighting the audience. Leipzig Zoo reports that online tickets are recommended to facilitate the flow of visitors.

Feeding and caring for the gentle giants

Did you know that Asian elephants need up to 150 kilograms of food every day? These impressive animals are not only large, but also extremely social creatures. They usually live in herds and work together to raise their young. Their sensitive skin requires special care: to protect themselves, elephants use earth or mud and cast their shadow over their chicks to protect them from the sun. These are just a few of the many fascinating characteristics that make elephants one of our greatest ecosystem designers.

The voice of nature

Another remarkable ability of these animals is their hearing - elephants can hear with their feet! They sense vibrations in the ground and are able to detect sounds of surprisingly low frequencies up to 3.5 kilometers away. In addition, their trunks, which comprise 100,000 muscles, have a variety of functions: they are not only used for smelling and breathing, but also for drinking and eating. At this point it can be said with a wink that an elephant is a “multi-talented” colossus in many ways.

The celebration of World Elephant Day is not only a beautiful occasion, but also a serious reminder of how important the protection of these animals is for our ecosystem and our world. It is worth taking a stand for the preservation of the last Asian elephants and working to protect them. But as the saying goes: “Small steps lead to big goals.” Let's all work towards this together!
