Leipzig Zoo: Crested deer in a dilemma – offspring in danger!

An exciting chapter in the animal community is currently underway at Leipzig Zoo: The shy East Chinese crested deer are attracting the attention of the zookeepers. Coming from the impressive high mountain landscape of the Himalayas, these animals are known not only for their distinctive hairstyle, but also for their shy nature, which makes the love life of the two crested deer Janno and Nicole a challenge. Despite being housed together, the two have so far shown no interest in reproduction, much to the concern of animal keeper Holger Wust, who reports on the MDR podcast about the difficulties affecting the reproduction of crested deer. However, the opportunity remains, because the mating season for crested deer is not until late autumn, as thueringen24.de explains.

Janno, who moved in in January 2025 from his predecessor Paul, who also failed to win Nicole over, is described as a “homebody”. Nicole, on the other hand, is much more active in the enclosure. Despite the failures so far, Wust remains optimistic that the two herd animals are getting closer. “There’s something going on,” you could say when you look at the hope of having offspring together.

Insights worth listening to

The new podcast “Elefant, Tiger & Co.” also contributes to the creation of this information. at which animal keeper Holger Wust introduces. In this podcast, which is moderated by MDR SACHSEN zoo reporter Dirk Hentze, not only the crested deer are discussed, but also numerous other animal residents of the zoo. If you list the animals that have already appeared, you will find a wide range:

  • Blattschneiderameisen
  • Bennettkängurus
  • Okapis
  • Große Ameisenbären
  • Schimpansen
  • Orang-Utans

The podcast, which has existed for over two years, provides exciting insights into the everyday life of the animal keepers and tells many interesting facts about the animals featured.

So it remains to be seen whether Janno and Nicole will ultimately make the zookeepers' hearts beat faster, because one thing is certain: the hope for future offspring of the crested deer will not be extinguished any time soon. The carers definitely have a good hand, and perhaps the quiet days will soon turn into festive moments full of life.
