The rheas in particular have every reason to be happy: the rhea rooster “Hannibal” finally has offspring after two years. The situation is a little different in the “South America” topic area, where the employees only found out about the pregnancy of the female Pudu “Penelope” late. Considering that Penelope is now in labor, it's clear that this is an exciting time for the zookeepers. It is the first Pudu birth at Leipzig Zoo, which comes with many questions and challenges. Animal keeper Janet Pambor notes that first births are often associated with risks. Unfortunately, the next morning they discovered that the young animal, which was two-thirds born, was already dead. This led the team to closely check the cub's weight to figure out what went wrong.

In addition, the pair of lions in the zoo are causing a stir. The lioness Kigali gave birth to four healthy cubs on July 5, 2023, which she cares for in an exemplary manner. The lion mother, who remains active, appears more vital and mobile, which the zookeepers are very pleased about. The two remaining young animals from their first litter also have a long journey behind them, as Kigali has already experienced some tragic fates. In 2019, she killed her first litter and a cub from the second litter in 2020, while another cub was seriously injured by her. Nevertheless, she has now fully taken up her duties again and is intensively caring for her four newborns, who are often spotted drinking.
