Lernsax in distress: E-mail failure disrupts communication in schools!
A technical problem is currently causing a stir in Saxon schools. The mail server of the educational platform Learn Sax refused service. This was confirmed, among others, by the Saxon State Office for Schools and Education, which stated that the teachers' email addresses were affected. This means that communication between teachers, students and parents via the platform is currently not possible.
Despite the disruption, students can still access lesson content. This technical problem has so far been reported by two schools, the Pirna high school and the Romain-Rolland high school in Dresden. The responsible IT service provider is already working on a solution, but how long the repair will take is still unclear. The reason for the difficulties is still unknown, but it is reassuring that emails should not be lost.
The role of LernSax
LernSax is a versatile, web-based e-learning platform operated by the Saxon State Office for Schools and Education. The platform was first publicly presented in 2014 and has been active throughout Saxony since 2020; over 500,000 people now use its functions. LernSax enables teachers and students to work in virtual classrooms, organize lessons and easily communicate with each other. As of June 2020, the platform already had around 450,000 users, and its use has increased again during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The platform not only promotes exchange via email, short messages and video conferences, but also supports cooperative learning and the integration of media-competent teaching methods. Students can upload assignments through the system and document their learning progress, while teachers can assign work and track their students' progress.
Adjustments and challenges
In the past, LernSax experienced massive disruptions that lasted until the end of 2020, particularly due to an update to the video conferencing system, which was replaced by the open source system BigBlueButton in 2022. From these experiences, comprehensive support has been developed for schools to successfully introduce and use LernSax.
So it remains to be seen when the communication gap created by this technical disruption will be closed. The use of modern e-learning platforms such as LernSax is becoming increasingly important, especially in a time when flexible learning methods and digital training are in the foreground.
