Mansfeld-Südharz: Suddenly no longer bottom of the future rankings!

The current ranking of the Prognos Future Atlas shows a play of light and shadow in the German regions. The Mansfeld-Südharz district now occupies 393rd place out of 400, instead of finding itself at the bottom of the list. However, this does not mean that the situation on site has fundamentally improved. MDR reports that changes in the ranking often cannot be equated with real improvements or deteriorations.

The Prognos Future Atlas, which has been examining the future opportunities and risks in Germany every three years since 2004, is based on numerous indicators such as population development, job density and purchasing power in order to assess the future stability of the regions. An overview of the underlying data is crucial as it comes from official statistics and therefore provides a sound basis. How KGST explains, the Atlas's analysts use a total of 31 indicators from various social and economic areas.

Stagnation and movement in statistics

In the current ranking, other regions are also affected: Stendal is now in 398th place and the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is in 397th place, both of which have slipped a few places. These developments show that the assessment of future opportunities for all three districts still has “very high risks”, according to the analysis by MDR.

Interestingly, a study by ILS Research entitled “Unequal Germany” reveals that some structurally weaker areas have made progress in recent years. In rural regions, especially in eastern Germany, median salaries are rising and emigration rates are decreasing. These developments are consistent with the results of the Prognos Future Atlas, where changes do not necessarily have to suggest an immediate improvement, but can also reflect other negative movements in neighboring regions.

The premises for positive development

For future developments, it is important how the regions respond to challenges such as climate change and demographic change. The need for structural policy support is clear so that rural areas are not further sidelined. Those who want to actively shape the economic future of their regions should therefore focus on the diverse opportunities available Friedrich Ebert Foundation can be developed in the coming years.

In summary, the current rankings and studies indicate that the future prospects in Germany remain complex. The developments in the individual regions can cast both light and shadow - the evaluation of this data is crucial for strategic planning and development. The best opportunities lie in actively dealing with the challenges and being willing to take new paths.
