DLRG warns: Swimming in the Elbe can be life-threatening!

Warnings against swimming in the Elbe have been increasing recently, especially in the region around Meißen. According to a report by the Saxon newspaper There have already been several alarming operations. On June 11th, a “person in the Elbe” was reported near Riesa at 9:09 p.m., whereupon the DLRG Meißen local group was able to intervene within 30 minutes. Fortunately, the swimmer managed to free himself from the Elbe.

Steffen Hausch, managing director of the DLRG Meißen, warns urgently about the dangers of swimming in the Elbe federal waterway. More and more people are looking for refreshment in the Elbe, but this entails considerable risks. The minimum depth of the fairway is 1.60 meters, and the suction effect can cause difficulties for even experienced swimmers. There are also risks from shipping traffic and dangerous bridge structures.

Increased risk of accidents in the Elbe

The alarming figures from the DLRG speak for themselves: By September 2024, there had been 353 fatal swimming accidents in Germany, 134 of them in rivers, including the Elbe. Loud mopo.de The current of the Elbe is also dangerous, especially between the groynes, where treacherous currents often form. Accidents, such as the tragic loss of a ten-year-old girl who disappeared there, make it clear that these dangers should not be taken lightly.
Heiko Mählmann, President of the DLRG Hamburg, emphasizes that many of these accidents can be avoided if bathers recognize the risks.

Another complicating factor is that the Elbe is significantly warmer than other bodies of water, which can be tempting, but also leads to a high germ load. The DLRG advises against swimming in the Elbe and expressly recommends that you only swim at official bathing areas and not alone and that you avoid alcohol.

Plans to improve security

Following recent incidents, the DLRG is striving to optimize its rescue measures. A new boat has already been put into service and another with diving equipment is expected to be ready for use by the end of October. But unclear responsibilities between the authorities repeatedly proved to be a hindrance. The DLRG currently has around 70 emergency services who require constant vigilance in order to be able to react quickly to potential emergencies.

Steffen Hausch is clearly in favor of a comprehensive ban on swimming in the Elbe and suggests putting up warning signs and new lifebuoys in vulnerable places such as the Old Town Bridge, since the old one has already been stolen.

Safe swimming spots and increased awareness of the dangers of swimming in rivers are crucial. Summer is just around the corner and many are longing to cool off. But safety must always come first. Anyone considering swimming in the Elbe should keep an eye on the filtering of local reports and always stay informed.
