Holidays in Saxony: PlusBuses and regular buses run as usual!
In Saxony, students are currently enjoying their well-deserved vacation, which means that traffic on many regional bus routes is becoming less frequent. However, the Oberelbe Transport Association (VVO) remains in tune with the times and ensures that the PlusBus and TaktBus lines run regularly even during school-free periods. This is confirmed by VVO employee Stefan Gerstenberg, who explains that these bus lines do not go on vacation.
The popular leisure destinations are easily accessible thanks to the PlusBus lines. The highlights include the PlusBus 418, which takes passengers to the outdoor swimming pool in Nossen, the PlusBus 532, which enables a trip to the Hoyerswerda Zoo, and the PlusBus 360, which leads to the summer toboggan run in Altenberg. During the school week, the PlusBuses run every hour from Monday to Friday. The service is also guaranteed on Saturdays on at least six trips and on Sundays and public holidays on four trips in each direction.
Reliable rhythm for smaller places
To connect smaller villages, the VVO offers an attractive service with five regular bus lines that run every two hours - even on Saturdays and in the early evening hours. These lines are a real asset as they continue to run at regular intervals during the holiday season and offer short transition times to trains and other bus services. These offers are financed by the districts, the Free State of Saxony and the VVO.
The PlusBuses have been connecting several places in Saxony since 2018, including Dresden, Altenberg, Großenhain and Sebnitz. Further connections extend between Kamenz and Bautzen as well as Hoyerswerda and Cottbus. In order to open up the region around Meißen and the Eastern Ore Mountains, six additional lines were implemented.
State funding and modernization
This year, the Free State of Saxony is providing over three million euros for the operation of the lines in the VVO. This is part of a broader strategy to promote local public transport in Saxony. A well-developed infrastructure is crucial for the quality of life and for the business location.
The Free State has set itself the goal of increasing the proportion of local public transport and is continually investing in innovative technology and expanding the infrastructure. Currently, 130 of the planned 153 lines are already in operation, which corresponds to an impressive progress of 73 percent. The Education Ticket for students, which only costs 15 euros per month, is also very popular and allows you to use all public transport.
With projects like TRANS-BORDERS+, which develop innovative solutions for public transport in border regions, Saxony shows that it is thinking about the future. This project is 80 percent funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and ends in November 2026. The modernization of passenger information systems and barrier-free stops is also supported by funding from the Free State.
Timetable information for all bus connections is available daily via the InfoHotline 0351 8526555 and at www.vvo-online.de/plusbus available. This means you can stay well informed even during your holidays and make sensible use of the leisure activities in Saxony.
