Fire inferno in Gohrischheide: Fire brigade fights around the clock!

The last few days have certainly not been easy for the emergency services in Gohrischheide. The devastating forest fire that broke out on July 1, 2025 brought numerous challenges. Dirk Zenker, the city fire chief of Großenhain, is on the front line with his 250 comrades in seven local fire departments and has been on duty around the clock since the fire began. The firefighters are fighting the flames in 12-hour shifts, while the exact number of hours worked is currently being recorded. Zenker, who has been working in the fire department since 1989 and was appointed city fire chief in 2018, emphasizes that the biggest challenge was not the technology used, but the lack of personnel, since many firefighters are employed. They are supported by volunteers and farmers who provide food and other help reports Sächsische.de.

But the situation is not just an organizational challenge. On Tuesday, July 1st, the fire broke out in a large area with numerous hot spots, making coordinated firefighting essential. Zenker says that despite the dangers posed by ammunition possibly hidden in the ground, there was no feeling of fear, but the responsibility for the comrades was enormous. This is also reflected in the words of District Administrator Ralf Hänsel, who recently announced with relief that the disaster alert in the Meißen district was lifted at 3 p.m. Luckily there were no human casualties, but there were three injured firefighters. The disaster was declared on Thursday, two days after the fire, a clear sign of the seriousness of the situation, which also reached the communities of Zeithain, Wülknitz and the city of Gröditz with warnings from the Nina warning app explains MDR.

Consequences of the forest fire

The extent of the forest fire is frightening: over 2,400 hectares, including 86 percent of the vegetation in the nature reserve, have been destroyed. 400 emergency services are working hard to combat the embers, especially near the Bundeswehr camp in Zeithain and in the towns of Jacobsthal, Heidehäuser and Nieska. Experts from the Saxon State Environment Agency will also be on site to discuss the effects of the fire and the future of the contaminated area with old ammunition reports MDR.

Global warming is also having an increasing impact on Germany: forest fires are increasing due to more dry and hot periods, which poses a serious threat to people and nature. Germany recorded over 3,000 hectares lost in 2022, which is the highest value in the last 30 years. Even if the number of forest fires has been reduced in 2023, the challenges are still enormous. The causes are often human in nature – be it arson or gross negligence. Zenker therefore appeals to the population to act responsibly in order to prevent future disasters Statista clarifies.

Currently, the ongoing danger from the embers and possible new fires remains an issue that affects not only the firefighters, but the entire region. Awareness of the risks continues to be raised because, as Zenker rightly states, “most fires are human responsibility.”
