Schönfelder Night of the Open Church: Together for the cohesion!

On May 27, 2025, the parish of Schönfeld organized the “Night of the Open Church” for the second time. The initiative aims to promote cohesion within the new parish of Radeburg and to strengthen getting to know each other among the parishes. 590 people are currently part of the Schönfeld-Linz-Ponickau parish, while around 5,700 people are registered throughout the parish. But the response of the event on Saturday evening was weaker than expected.

Visitors were able to look forward to a varied program, the singing of folk songs together, a rich buffet and various activities for children. A video portrait of the community was presented in the church, which gave an insight into community life. Sandra Dehmel, Antje Kurz and Manuela Gröhnert also organized a creative competition for the annual solution. Seven children and 14 adults took part; The organizers wanted a larger number of participants. Small prices were awarded for the best contributions.

In connection with the "Night of the Open Church", the "Friedenskorn" Alliance ", which on May 8th at the Großenhain Geschwister-Scholl monument in Großenhain. The alliance, represented by the former Saxon Interior Minister Horst Rasch, distributed information material and patches that symbolize the motto "swords to plugs".

The event in Schönfeld is part of a greater movement that manifests itself in the "Long Night of Churches". This ecumenical night symbolizes a fruitful cooperation between the regional churches and originally found its origin in Vienna in 2005. The 20th anniversary is celebrated this year. In 2016, the event was carried out for the first time in Switzerland in the canton of Aargau, where around 80 churches opened their doors to the population. The next long night of the churches will take place on Friday, May 23, 2025.
