Big warning day in Saxony: Sirens are wailing, safety net is being tested!
The nationwide warning day will take place in Saxony on Thursday, September 10, 2025. Many people still remember the siren tests, which raise awareness and awareness of the importance of warning systems. The Ministry of the Interior in Dresden has called for the alarm systems to be put through their paces, while the population is informed about the test alarm via smartphones and digital display boards. The siren infrastructure and other warning devices such as loudspeaker trucks are checked around the clock in order to warn people quickly and reliably in the event of an emergency. Here in Saxony, over 3,400 sirens are connected to the network, as diesachsen.de reports.
At 11 a.m. sharp, the sirens sound and warning messages reach citizens' mobile devices. The test alarm is sent via various channels: from smartphones with special warning apps to digital billboards to radio and television. The new Cell Broadcast warning channel also plays an important role as it sends messages to all mobile devices - even those that are set to silent. The all-clear is given at 11.45 a.m., after an extensive test phase. This all shows how important a well-functioning siren infrastructure is, especially at a time when natural and other disasters can occur more frequently.
Growth of siren infrastructure
A lot has happened in Saxony over the last few years. Thanks to targeted investments, the number of sirens and their availability have increased. While around 3,200 sirens were active in 2020, today there are around 3,400 sirens available. This went a long way towards strengthening alerting capacities, according to t-online.de. Funding from the federal and state governments also made it possible to build new sirens and modernize existing systems.
Since 2021, around 4.9 million euros in federal funds have flowed to Saxony to promote the further expansion of the siren networks. From 2023, an additional almost 3.2 million euros have been made available from the Saxon state budget. Everything together underlines the great effort to ensure that everyone can be optimally warned in the event of a disaster.
The role of sirens in the modern warning landscape
The results of a survey by the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) are just as promising. It was found that 95% of the population was reached with one or more warning devices. Sirens are considered the second most popular means of warning, even ahead of warning apps. The managing director of the Association of Manufacturers of Civil Protection Systems, Benno Schrief, particularly emphasizes the reliable function of the sirens. These are an essential part of our security architecture and can also be operated during power outages, which further increases their effectiveness, reports LinkedIn.
However, the challenges remain. According to the results, 41% of the population still did not receive a warning, indicating gaps in the siren network. Benno Schrief is therefore calling for better framework conditions and long-term investment commitments from politicians in order to further expand the siren infrastructure. Municipal planners should also be given more planning security and simplified applications in order to further modernize and expand these important infrastructures.
Overall, the upcoming warning day not only shows the current status of the warning systems, but also the importance of an effective and comprehensive warning infrastructure, which significantly increases the feeling of security of the population in Germany.
