There are signs of change in Meißen: today 22,752 eligible voters are called to elect a new mayor. After 21 years in office, the previous mayor Olaf Rasche is not running for re-election. All eyes are on the three candidates who face each other in this exciting election: Martin Bahrmann from the FDP, the independent Markus Renner and René Jurisch, who is running for the AfD but is not a member of the party. René Jurisch, 51 years old and a trained bricklayer and building contractor, emphasizes that as mayor he wants to act as an “employee” of the citizens. His plans include recruiting young families, strengthening resident doctors and improving urban green projects. About 25 years ago, Jurisch was briefly active in the right-wing extremist NPD, which is still a topic in public discussion.

- Martin Bahrmann (FDP): Der 38-Jährige, verheiratet und Vater von drei Kindern, hat sich seit 2009 als Stadtrat und seit 2014 als Kreisrat einen Namen gemacht. Sein Motto “Bürger zuerst” steht im Zentrum seiner Politik. Er plädiert für eine Reduzierung der Verwaltungslasten, keine Steuererhöhungen und mehr Personal im Ordnungsdienst. Zudem plant er eine bessere Anbindung an Dresden und kreative Lösungen gegen Leerstand.
- Markus Renner (parteilos): Der 45-Jährige, geboren in Karl-Marx-Stadt und seit 2016 Finanzbürgermeister, bringt viel Erfahrung mit. Seine Visionen für eine lebenswerte Stadt umfassen unter anderem intelligente Ampeln, ein durchdachtes Verkehrs- und Parkkonzept sowie die Eröffnung von Freizeitangeboten, wie einem neuen Tierpark und Freibad. Sein Motto “Gemeinsam gestalten wir eine Stadt, in der Herz und Heimat Hand in Hand gehen” schürt Optimismus.
- René Jurisch (AfD): Jurisch, ebenfalls verheiratet und Vater von vier Kindern, geht mit einem Fokus auf soziale Fragen und Stadtentwicklung an den Start. Er möchte mehr Augenmerk auf Drogenproblematiken legen und den Austausch mit städtischen Firmen intensivieren. Zudem setzt er auf mehr Grünflächen und die Verbesserung der Angebote für Senioren.
